oky! spark at last but......

<< < (3/4) > >>

Hillclimb#42:
Hopefully someone else will chime in here. I have not had many electrical problems. It seems to me that, it would have a weak spark at all rpm's and revving it up would not help a weak spark. My air screws are between 1 and 2 turns out. I start at 1 1/2 and tweak one way or the other after it runs good with jetting at 1 1/2. When checking for spark, I have trouble seeing it during the day, especially with a soft kick. The book says to always use a plug when checking for spark or you may cause damage without it.
Again, I am not the electrical expert, but I can't see how the windings would have been changed. What about cleaning and securing the ground connections? Have you tried a cold start with no choke or holding throttle wfo? I bet you have, and I know its way basic, but I am throwing ideas out there, no insult intended.

DoldGuy:
As I stated  your other post a fresh 93 has 165-170 compression, what is yours?????????
It seems you are chasing after an electrical problem, when it could be as simple as compression. Help us, help you.

Jopiz:
Electricity doens't know if you are pushing it or kicking it. I've been told not to use a resistor spark plug cap with a resistor spark plug. May be worth checking. Maybe you should check the crank seals. Clean all your contacts with contact cleaner. Check the stator with an ohm meter. Check the pickup pulse coil with meter. Those are just simple coils. If the readings are 0 ohms or infinite you got a bad coil. Also if they are out of spec they might not operate correctly.

Lack of compression makes it hard to start. When you push it you get a lot more RPM so start up will be easier. Also if the timing is off it wont kickstart easily.

Usually when a coil breaks down the CDI also gets damaged. These things are really basic stuff with outboard engines. CDI's and coils are replaced for every 5 year. Do you have an access to an another CDI?

Go and get a nice compression gauge and a service manual for your machine. You'll be surprised how many problems you diagnose with those.

Eliminate these things one at a time. If you do everything at once eventually you wont even remember "What got it running".

kxracer:
Dear all,

something you may want to check is the gap between the pickup coil and the magento flywheel.

My mates RM250 all of a sudden would not start off the kick start, only by bumping it and then nothing.

We took it a local motorbike electrical specialist who put an oscilliscope on the ignition. This proved the coil, CDI and stator.

The gap between the flywheel and pick up was 3-4 mm and when he moved it to around 0.6-1mm, the spark was much stronger.

We are now sorting out the fuelling issues.

Hope this helps.

my rm250 started having probs like the above and it turned out to be the stator windings,it would start with a push but had trouble starting of a kick,if you can find out what resistance the coils are supposed to have then measure them to make sure they are within range, also a trick i learnt from other top enduro racers who had to start the bikes 1st kick was to 1,tip the bike over to make sure enough juice in the carb,2 give the bike a couple of gentle prods on the kick not full kicks but enough to charge the cdi up,find tdc and one big kick also the old favourite of "leading" the plug tip, which involves using a pencil to coat the tip of the plug when dry also if it helps use a piece of emery cloth on the ignition pick ups on the flywheel just to take the rust off and make good contact hope it helps...ps anyone know what other kickstarts fit a kx125 1995 ?
