Urban Assault DualSport ride in Oklahoma City.
« on: April 11, 2010, 03:00:23 PM »
The day started out nice,  a warm sunny day for the Urban Assault DualSport ride in Oklahoma City.  It was a benefit ride for the wife of a young man that died from a brain injury in a tough man contest.  It was a waypoint only ride, no tracks or maps.  At each waypoint on the GPS there was a clue we had to find and figure out.

We met at Java Dave's, everyone had coffee, breakfast, hot chocolate or some kind of combination.

While we were getting ready Terry got the bright idea to drive across the rail road tracks.  Someone
might have said he "Couldn't do it".  Well he couldn't, I was slow with the camera so I got the pic after he got un-stuck.

We got about 3 waypoints into the ride when Terry realized he had a flat.  Could it have been the tracks??
It could have been the penny he drove over.  So we drove back to the coffee shop for the tools in Nano's truck.
He had a milk crate we set the bike on, so tire changing 101 commenced.

I was getting ready to take pictures of the progress when the crate gave way under the weight of the KLR650.
It happened so fast no one could react.  The bike fell on Nate.

I heard a snap and thought the bike had broken his leg.  He reassured us he was hurt but not that bad, he
just needed to "Walk it off".
We got the wheel back on the bike and off we went.  Someone had said it was a race so I didn't take any pictures
until waypoint 53 when I was told it was NOT a race.

I brought a flashlight like they said we would need for finding one of the clues but Nate and Nano said "We don't need no stinking flashlight we've got headlights on our bikes and off they went.  Here they are returning.

The last waypoint was the "Thunder Run motorcycle meet.  Man did we look out of place in motocross gear and muddy.
A shot of Nate.

All in all it was a good day ending at the "Wall of Death".

That looks like a pretty fun ride!  I didn't realize how slippery that hill was after the water crossing at the end of the video.  Thanks for posting it for all others to see.

I fell down on the CR500 3 weeks ago and hurt my right knee.  That's why I was on the KLR and not the dualsport KX500.
I can't kick start the K5 yet.    Rode the KLR on the Arkansas Hillbilly ride (April 1st) for the same reasons and had quite a few knee related problems.  I'm getting better.  If I'm at 100% I can tweak the KLR.  It's been a good bike to me.  Laughing:  Hasn't hurt me and always starts.

Danger, thanks for posting the vids.  Looked like a lot of fun. And good training.
Unfortunately, the local authorities here in suburban L.A./OC, don't waste any time finding riders like that.
They have no tolerance for stunting, riding on the sidewalk, and riding on private property.
Can I come there and do that?

Man they are the same way here, that's why you only see me a few times.  I had the blue Yamaha coat on, riding the black KLR with a black helmet.
The park like setting with the foundation from an old building has no loitering signs.  The hospital complex has their eye on the property and the guy is holding out for more money.  Homeless people used to live there until they cut down all the brush and tore out the old buildings.

I actually saw you guys.  I was going down the turnpike on my way to the rally and saw a couple dual sports off in the field about to go across this drainage creek.  As I was walking around looking at the bikes I spotted the dual sports sitting in the sea of Harleys and choppers.  Of course I had to go take a look.  To the best of my memory I think there was a KLR and a DRZ.  Where do you ride that 500, at Draper?  I have been kicking around the idea of doing a KX500AF to replace my KX/KDX hybrid and would love to see one in person.

My motor is at Stewart's,  waiting on a few more parts.  As soon as I get it back together your more than welcome to take a look at it.

That is such a cool idea.  I wish we had the kind of terrain for something like that.  If we did that up here, all the waypoints would be trees and 'no hunting' signs. :)
