Just bought my new project bike a 1992 kx500. Got the bike for 300.00. It had a piston seizure which I was aware of,but upon taking the top end apart it also had a rod seizure. Oh well. I have rebuilt alot of bikes and had a pretty good idea of how much I would have into the bike when all was done. I always use Eric Gorr's Forward Motion for all my motor needs; he quoted me a price to repair the gouges in the cylinder, replate, porting, polishing, repairing the cylinder head(since it was infused with piston particles) and repairing the crank with new bearings, hot rod and piston and rings....925.00. Great price but I still haven't taken the remainder of the motor apart. I have since procured a 91 engine in great working condition with all electrics, carb insulator, reeds and carb for 700.00. Needless to say when I get finished this bike will be better than new. I will post pics as I am able for any who are interested.
I have been riding motorcycles and working on them, off and on for 24 years. I started when I was 12 with my 78 Xr80 with a tricked out powroll 105 motor. First order of business was to dismantle a running bike and try to put it back together. I was successful with no help from anyone. I enjoy working on bikes as much as riding them. I would classify myself as an intermediate rider. I currently work for myself and fortunately have time to spend on my projects. I have a wife and daughter. My wife hates anything with a motor which makes things a bit dicey at times. When my daughter is old enough, I have a yamaha 80cc quad waiting for her to ride with Dad.
My brother and I have a sandblasting and powdercoating business on the side from our regular job. If anyone needs anything blasted or coated feel free to contact me for an estimate. We have quick turn around times and very reasonable prices.
Nice to meet all of you, I look forward to learning more about my new bike and sharing my experiences with all of you.
