1996 engine in 2000 frame.
« on: March 29, 2019, 08:10:00 AM »
I've recently bought a complete bike in parts, I've since found out the frame is from a 2000 model, can I use this with the rest of my 1996 parts or is it not possible.

The 96 motor will fit in that frame, but the plastic and subframe won’t work. I’m not completely sure about the suspension. It might be cheaper to buy a 1996-1998 frame and use the rest of your parts.

Finding one in the UK is proving hard, I would rather get a 1996 frame and keep everything the same.

I think the forks would work with the 2000 frame  if you swapped the stem out from a 1999-2001 set of triple clamps. The shock might work too, as they did not change the linkage that much until 2004. The swing arm most likely won’t work though. It might be worth it to wait for a 1996 frame, or to pay the shipping from the states if you can find one here.

I think I will try and get one from the states, the shipping costs seem to be through the roof.

You didn't say what 1996 parts you had other than the engine?? One mans version of a complete bike is another mans version of a box of spare parts so depends who you bought it from and if you care if the build is going to be cost effective or not!

I think instead of buying frames etc your best bet would be to spend a couple of hours mocking it up, if you have a complete 2000 frame + sub frame and plastics / nuts bolts etc plus a 1996 engine you have a bike that can be built, if not go back to the drawing board!

Seems to just be the frame itself that is 2000, swingarm, subframe and motor all 1996.
Suspension and plastics also 1996.

I think I will just have to source a 96 frame and do it that way.
