Kx250 2004 Carburetor Jetting/setup help please
« on: August 01, 2013, 05:55:24 AM »
Hi guys the previous thread went off topic I think
So I've started a new thread I hope that's ok
So I've got an 04 kx250

Carbs off anything I should know/tips before dismantling ? For a beginner?
I'm stripping because I'm getting spooge symptoms. Hence running rich

I'm running this at an altitude at 950ft above sea level.

Any info would be greatly appreciated, pretty desperate for a custom walk through of a strip clean and setup

Hello.
As per the other thread, you still need to pull the jets and the needle out.
Until we know what size they are (Markings are on the jets and needle) we can't really give you a place to go.
Advice?
Don't bend or break anything  :-o
Take some pics of the inside and post them so we can see how clean or dirty.

You never acknowledged Flyin Hawaiians post on the other thread about it possibly being a bad crank seal like his was....have you verified that you don't have a bad seal?
If not...you could possibly be pissin DIrectly into the wind trying to jet it correctly. :?
Have you noticed your gearbox oil slowly disappearing for no apparent reason?
Probably wouldn't hurt to do a leak down test before you possibly start pullin your hair out because of a bad seal and not improper jetting.

All true.
Jetting won't fix a mechanical problem.
In this case I went for the jetting first just because that was the question asked and it's easy to verify as a starting point and, it's a cheap and easy fix if that is really the problem.
But lets face it... A 10 year old 2T probably needs a bit of help mechanically :-)

I wasn't trying to direct that at you Blaster....I just noticed that Shredstar never commented on FH's post about seals...leak down tests are free too if you have the correct access to one....or the means to make one.  :-D

Hey Foxx4Beaver.
I wasn't directing my reply at you either.
I'm trying to help Shredstar to see that we can't help if we don't get answers to our questions.
We each have reasons for asking these questions, all of them well intentioned.
Come one Shredstar, help us help you

I recently went through a slew of jets before i was able to get my bike to run right... I ended up with 155 main, 50 pilot nafg needle second clip from the top 50 power jet. I also have a 04 KX 250 with extremely low hours. I'm still not sure if my main seals are leaking or not... i had to drop that main jet down so low it makes me wonder you know? Bike seems to run good now... How else can you tell if the main seals are leaking?

Oh by the way, i'm in Grants Pass Oregon...so elevation 1000-4000 riding

Gotta do a leak down test with positive and negative pressure.
No other way to do it that I know of.

Hi guys just seen the posts, I've been working away last week so haven't had to work on bike, ill be on it tomorrow so ill take needle jet out and report back and take some pics, I've got some concerns though, as the weather changes temperature/humidity and altitude from different riding locations and me altering the jetting too much I don't want to make the jetting too lean just stop the spooging this was the original problem, so does anyone have the stock settings for jet settings so I can see if they have been Changed that way I could thoughly clean first and check if its been changed from stock making it spooge oil from the muffler, then decide how much ill need to change if I need to please

You will need to get the needle out and also take the float bowl off and remove the main and pilot jet in there. The power jet is also under the float bowl. Let us know what those jets are.
Also, how does the bike run at WOT? (wide open throttle) Does it smoke like crazy and spit and sputter, kinda sound like the spark plug is about to foul?

Thanks for the info sandblaster

Tbh Charlie it all sounds and feels ok when running through all throttle opening positions no heavy smoke at all really not that I notice, then again I'm no expert, the spark plug had fouled a few times last time I had it out enough so It wouldn't start and I had to physical remove it replace it with an iridium one :) but I think that was due to my first hour of riding in 9 years driving shal we say slow, which made it black...

If you're just buying "on the shelf" carb cleaner in a spray can at your local auto parts store,it'll be fine.

Some auto stores around here carry a more "industrial strength" that comes in 5 Gallon pails that you have to ask for.
