currently yz 250, thinking about kx 500
« on: August 25, 2010, 02:47:32 AM »
hi guys. i am currently on my 4th yz 250 (an 86). i am 40 now and well past my prime (out of shape). however i have dreamed about a 500cc 2 stroke since i was a kid. i am now looking at an 89 kx 500 in great shape.
i usually ride on dirt roads, sand pits, and putt around the track coasting over the jumps on my 250. i am wondering if i can coast around the track on a 500 or if it'll be too much. mostly on the roads and sand pits i am pretty sure i would be fine on the 500, but i was thinking about getting back on the track a little (havent really road or raced on the track since my early 20s).
having never ridden a 500 im just a little worried. cheers

Hey Buzzard,

I too ride a YZ250 (2006) and always wanted a 500.  I am 41 and was worried about the power of a 500.  I bought a MINT 99 about a month ago and all I can say is go for it.  The 500 will feel heavier and bigger than the YZ but the power is amazing.  I don't ride on tracks but I do hit the sandpits, fireroads and the occasional trail.  So far I have been impressed and would sell the YZ over the KX if I had to make a choice.  Also, if it doesn't have a kickstand, get the Probillet model (quality is amazing).  I also put on a Tugger strap which is worth it's weigh in gold when you need it. I threw in a few links if you're interested in either.

buzzard..if you like wheelstanding.?.get it,if you dont,i would think carefully about it,you could be idling along in 5th and with no clutch crack the throttle and if your not careful flip it soooo easy..but in saying that that extra power can sometimes help you get out of trouble as well..i race a 2010 monster kx500afx here in aus" and get heaps of arm pump from just trying to keep her in a straight line and from lifting up,but in saying that if you ride aware at all times you should be right.."hell yeah get it."you only live once..ride safe and welcome to the big bore club..i told my missus when i got mine if this bike ends up killing me(cause i am 1/2 mad anyway and love doing massive monos before during and after races) i want you to put this on my gravestone..I KNEW I SHOULD OF BET ON THEM 65 HORSES RATHER THAN RIDE THEM....hee hee hee. by the way i am 47 and would not have any other bike and reckon i will be riding this bike untill 60 easy..later bro..go green, blue is a gay/girly colour anyways..remember this also better your sister in a brothel than your brother on a yamaha..by the way there is a choice 92 model for sale here on ebay(aus")that looks to me in original condition going fairly cheap..not a scratch on it,looks like its been garaged its whole life.?.

  Ayy, Mick's Right on there!
I have no business being on a 125 let alone  5 hunnert. :-D
You don't have run the girl WFO, a well tuned stock bike has a generous powerband, & ya don't have to wind them out as tight as a watchspring to make good power.
the '89 to '04 is essentially the same bike so anything in those years still has a pretty good selection of parts avail.
  I don't regret buying/building mine.

i took it for a spin this afternoon and holy crap. just letting the clutch out and bearly above idle it felt like i was cruizin. i took it down a gravel road and opened it up a little bit. wow is all i can say. i still have to round up a couple hundred dollars to meet his asking price, but im gonna get it if it doesnt sell before i get there.

buzz..what your best option i think would be.would be not to de-tune or go to a larger back sprocket as l/b/sprocket would make it even more scarier down low(bottom end power),you can put a stopper(piece of nylon/plastic)block in your throttle tube housing to limit the revs you need, and as you get more used to the power, you can just shave 1mm at a time off it until your happy with what you can use(power)or conversly you can get a throttle tube housing already made for the kwakas on the smaller bikes that have a long threaded bolt with a locknut on it that you adjust to limit the amount of throttle there fore power that is required,,and as you get more confident(want more power)just crack the nut wind the bolt out 1/2 to a full turn out and that would allow more fuel/air in to give quicker acceleration/power..and i would not even go down the path of changing the volume of fuel/oil/air mixture of the combustion chamber(what 2 head gaskets)would do,as this could change other things and just complicate your problem..?..remember..better your sister in a brothel than your brother on a yamaha/honda/suzuki...go green bro and stick with it..and if your 5hunghy ends up killing you,.?.put this on your gravestone..I KNEW I SHOULD OF BET ON THEM 65 HORSES RATHER THAN RIDE THEM..hee hee hee..ride hard bro.. you only live once..madmick.(im not realy mad,i just get cranky sometimes).later.bro.

Spend some time with it.  You will find it more fun to ride than your 250.  After a few hours you will be blipping the throttle all the time just to make yourself smile.  Don't try to ride it fast on a track you'll kill yourself!  At our age this is recreation man!!

I would stick with the stock 14/47 sprockets. If you put a 13/51 it is going to launch even harder!  If you try and de tune it might loose reliability.  Nothing is less satisfying than being miles away trying to start an unreliable 500! If you are used to a good running 250 you can do this!  Keep us updated.

Hone your throttle and clutch control skills and you will be fine. They are really easy to ride. Short shift!

thanks guys. i would love to keep this thing. its so much better then my yz, better suspension, much better brakes, and dont even mention power. im gonna keep it for a while and try to practice going slow.  :-D

i like the throttle limiter idea, thanks, they probably come stock on kids bikes.

looking at spec sheets the 500 isnt much heavier then the 250, it seems heavier though

yep i got 1 on a 2009 monster klx 110,should be same size throttle cable,if not you can get an after market 1,1 tip get the biggest chunkiest back tyre you can get as better braking less wheel spin = more control, you dont want to get to much wheel spin on this old girl, cause if she hooks up sudenly shell throw you..ride safe man..
