hi, I live in central Alabama and just picked up a 1990 KX500 project, I've always been a car guy but I decided to give bikes a try. I've already read so much great info on this site I can't wait to get my K5 going.

Welcome to the site. What does the bike need?

I think it needs the timing adjusted from what I've read on here. I've cleaned the carb and fuel tank, checked for spark, replaced the spark plug and kicked the living daylights out of the thing and it still won't start(I even tried some starting fluid and still nothing). once I get it running it needs new plastics and the frame recoated. the previous owner had the top end rebuilt and put an FMF pipe on it and he said it runs but he had to pull it behind a truck to get it started.

Welcome Crazy,
There are some very knowledgeable guys who hang out here and have been a great help to myself and others.
Just like car or truck, troubleshooting a no start condition for me is the pits... I have a hard time sticking to a plan and get sidetracked way to easy... I'll try to post some links to stuff like setting the float height and stock jetting etc.
The best thing I did was get a Factory Service Manual and the Clymer to go with it. You can usually find used copies of both. New ones will run about $100.00 for all of them. There are some downloadable ones or on CD alot cheaper.

when they only start with a bump, usually this equates to having low cylinder compression.some things to check first are piston/rings, head gasket, reeds, base gasket and crank seals.a fat spark always helps too. you wont be short of pointers on here, thats for sure, enjoy, kwakman.
