2000 kx250 restoration project looking for help with motor build guidance
1000rrstunna:
Hi guys new to this forum just scored a 2000kx 250 for 900$.. the bike is in excellent condition in fact it almost looks new and has the factory graphics on it still!! but there is one issue... I have parts to make a running motor but im not sure the best route to go about this..
the bike came with the following
clymer manual
2 cylinder jugs needing replate but complete with powervalves and covers
1 cyl head
a whole set of cases dis assembled # stamped on case (kx250LE011495)
gears and all parts seem to be there and all in boxes but i have no clue how it goes together and if the bearings are good in the cases...
whole bottom end still assembled locked crank # stamped on case ( KX250KE020346)
stator
clutch cover
stator cover
clutches ( 3 full sets baskets and all looking to be in decent shape )
New stock bore wiesco piston set stock bore new in box
entire gasket set new in box
reed valves
carb in excellent shape
what i have done so far
Sent the piston ( for sizing to new cyl plating) one cyl head and jug out to milennium for a powervalve service, inspection, cleaning and re-plate. i sent the one #'ed 1851 which is the 98/99 head vs the #1835 which is from a 97..... hope i made the right decision on that...
I also bought a wiesco crank kit for a 93-2001 kx250 with bearings for 170$
now who can help me build one good motor out of all the stuff i have or where can i buy a super detailed manual
do you guys know of any big salvage yards that may have parts if needed?
Any help is appreciated and I would be willing to donate the extra parts left over for your time plus $ or if you know of anyone who isn't going to rip me off to do the work that would also be cool
i would really like to do the build myself I am very mechanical but this kinda scares me.... maybe I am overthinking it I have all the tools and dont bange things around like a cave man haha
i'm in chicago il area zipcode 60527
thanks for any help offered or suggestions

The very next thing you should do IMO is to get a factory Kawasaki service manual......there are a few on ebay for 25 to 30 dollars. It will help you enormously as you put things together and if you have any questions about the specs of the various parts. Keep posting your progress for us!!

Welcome to the site 1000rrstunna! Sounds like you have a fun project on your hands. I found that YouTube can be a big help when trying to figure out how to do things. Something about seeing someone actually do the procedure that really helps me. Rocky Mountain ATV/MC has a really helpful YouTube channel. I also agree with Garand1 that you need to buy the factory service manual. As far as used parts go, Sandblaster is a member on this site and is a very honest engine builder and part re-seller. I would trust him with any project. He is currently moving shops, but should be back online in a couple of weeks.
We would love to see some pictures of your progress. Here is a quick guide on how to do that:

Sounds fun , im also doing the same but my bike was a wreck.
I have the clymer manual and think its very well detailed TBH.
Regarding the official kawasaki manual , i have no idea how it is.
Help wise you seem to have everything covered , taking the bottom of the engine apart is pretty easy with the right tools , this is my first bike i have every stripped down.
But the tools are expensive , i bought a crank case splitter , fly wheel puller , 8mm t handle spanner , clutch basket holder and now need a blind bearing puller.
Yes i know a waste if you use them only once , but if you plan on building more bikes then they save you a huge amount in the long run.
Im UK based so dont have access to sand blaster and his amazing engine skills.
Depending on what your going for i would get the engine vapour blasted for thar new look , and do you want it original looking?
Im going for fully custom and will start a thread next week.
Also please start a thread as we all love progress pics
