Over the Top...
« on: July 08, 2010, 07:19:40 AM »
I have made some headway with the videos and software, and started using the Go Pro HD as a Replay feature.
This race is the steepest, and overall most challenging in both states that we race, Indiana and Illinois. The locals and the clubmembers plan on keeping it that way. Its in Polo, Illinois, only 130 ft to the lights, about 140-145 to the crest and said to be 43 degrees. The hill is pretty intimidating for everyone, but kids, women and stock length bikes all race there. Only one female had made it over, ever, and until we got there no 65 had made it over. stock length bikes usually come home broken. I got the 500 alot closer to dialed in and huck the top, in the 2nd round. The ride felt good, but was still slow by a couple tenths.

Thanks dirtjunkie,
This site has helped me alot to get the bikes running well, but by far the fun is riding and racing them. Not sure if everyone has dial-up, and cannot watch them, or just not too interested in hillclimbing vids to begin with. I am fighting with software and camera angles to show the difficulty, but no matter what it looks alot easier on the vids. I only  usually record the local guys and a few others that request to be on youtube. The events are usually at least 4 hours long. So if it looks like there's only a couple guys per size of bike, thats why. Its pretty tough to be focused on what i need to do in three classes, make changes, help my gf and other teammates, and get the whole race on the camera. I appreciate the comments, as I am also learning about making a good video. there is alot of forethought needed that I don't use, so far. I've considered adding interviews with winners of Youth Fast Time and Adult Fast Time, and maybe one or two with riders, who crash their brains out, but not sure how stupid that would be. In my world that would be cool, especially 5-10 years from now. Thanks for the input...

Well I might be a little biased, but I thought they were great. I love watching hillclimb videos. The shots were great and the hill looks fun, like you said no matter what angle you shoot it from it never seems to show how steep the hills actually are. Keep up the great work and keep posting them and I will keep watching them :-D.

Thanks,man.

Here's a little tiny segment of our last one. The camcorder died in less than 5 min., but it was also a crash-up derby. Goshen Ironmen hillclimb, the fastest guys jump a 40 foot gap with less than 20 feet to launch from. After several seasoned guys bit the dirt, I rolled it. Got a 3rd in the 600 class, the faster two made the jump.

Ya see why i rolled it? They were cartin off people and bikes all day. That was Pat Sarver. He always goes for it even though he has a bad muscle injury from the past in both of his arms. That wreck on the vid put him in the hospital for some back surgery. Dr. told him he would never ride again. To put it nicely he told the the Dr, to F- off and walked out of the hospital. He plans on being at the climb this weekend and watching from a lounge chair.

This link is for the crash video from our hillclimb last year, it doesn't represent how steep the hill is but maybe you can get an idean by how the bikes are tumbling down the hill.

Those were just the crashes, there wer quite a few rides over, I think my son went over 6 times on that hill and 2 more on the side hill. I'll see if I can dig up a video of the good rides, most people like to see the crashes.

Is that a KX500 at 7 minutes in?  He makes it almost all the way, then the bike tumbles almost all the way back down.  Probably had a bunch of (slightly) used forks, bars, subframe, etc. to ebay after that one.

It looks like that guy picked the best possible line, and went right where he wanted,,,and is excellent control and use of the best powerplant on earth. That video should be used for "Advanced KX500 Studies" in graduate school at Dirt Bike University. The class would be called "How It's Done"
"Endeavor to persevere."
