Back on a 500
« on: March 29, 2010, 06:46:12 PM »
Hey everyone, I am new to the site but by no means a newbie to dirt bikes. I have had a multitude of 2 strokes but my true love is big bore smokers. I got my first used 1975 Yamaha MX 400 in 1980 and have been an addict ever since. Been the proud owner of a 81 YZ465, 83 YZ490 and 89 KX500. Got married had 6 kids and gave up on riding / hurting myself for 10 years or so.

Got a 07 Harley Road King Custom and a 09 Harley 883 Iron and will never tire of them but something was missing. Then last Oct. bought a 05 ATK 450MX plated off of Craigslist and fell head over heals in love with dirt bikes again. (even if it is a four stroke)

Fast forward to two days ago, picked up a 03 KX500 from the original owner for $1,850. Drove ten hours round trip with the flu just to see the beast, but it was worth it. The thing still had its original front tire on it, low hours but not pampered.

I plan on spending the summer making it street legal and riding it when I can. Ordered reeds, reed spacer, lighting stator, 15 tooth front sprocket and service manual today. (this is fun)

Checkin out the site and having a great time becoming re-introduced to the world of big bore smokers again.

Please forgive any dumb questions I have in advance.  :-P

I am leaving this world the same way as I came in to it, screaming and covered in somebody else's blood.

If you cant fix it with a hammer, it's an electrical problem

I think my 86 is still on the original front tyre for obvious reasons......
Welcome aboard...
And lo, I did loft the front wheel and carried it forth to the unbelievers, and cast it down before them and said unto them ''look now upon the might of my throttle control ye pitiful cretinous ones''
And the unbelievers did quake in their boots....

Hey Fyrbug,
  Glad you stumbled upon us,
I would have to say at least half of us have been on the same road,  Rode when we were kids, married, had our own kids, either got them bikes and started riding again or got them out of the house and started again.
Don't feel any question any better or worse than what you could find in the old posts.
Don't believe me?  go to the 500 thread and go to page 134 or probably 135 by now and read back to now.
I've made it to page 88 or so and then get side tracked.
  Anyways your in good company,
Welcome!

I live in North Central Washington State. I was born here, moved to Palm Springs, Ca. in my twenties to seek my fortune and never found it. Met my wife of 19 years and had all 6 of our children there.

The economy did to us what I'm sure it did to most of you and in the summer of 08 we sold our home and business and moved back to "home". The wife and kids love it and I'm happier now than I have been in years even though $ is tight.

So, i'm back with my childhood riding buddy and my cousin, who both gave up on dirt bikes years ago. Since I came back and bought the ATK my cuz ordered a KTM 530 and my old riding pal picked up a KTM 300 smoker and just last week he grabbed a 2000 CR500 off of Craigslist. I must be a bad influence. Since he got the CR that sort of motivated me to pick up the KX. I have to remind myself that I'm old and my kids are still young so "go easy" and dont get stupid.

I look forward to reading more posts and learning from your experience and mistakes.
