Posting Some Pics of the Work In Progress...............
« on: December 19, 2009, 03:39:36 PM »
The work in progress.  Taking it out for a ride tomorrow.  New O ring chain.  New 14/48 sprockets.  Maxxis Desert IT on back.  New Maxxis on front.  New handlebars and guards.  Few other things...will see how she runs.

Looks like you are giving that K5 the attention she deserves! Now that she has new sneakers give us a ride report & also how that "Slick" vinyl seat worked out :-D

The KDX looks great also!

DoldGuy, I was driving to Cycle Gear yesterday and saw a 2002 K5 for sale.  I went in and asked the guy if he would trade me seats.  I give him the "slick" seat and he gives me the black seat off the bike he has been trying to sell for a long time.  I give him a little cash and we trade seats.  This seat is in great condition.  The vinyl one was also in great condition.  I feel like it's Merry Christmas to me!  Here is a pic of the "slick" seat.  This is what she looked like the day I brought her home about about a month ago.

Good trade. I have the same seat and graphic on a '95. If you get wet even a little bit it is tough to hang onto.
Did you peal the tank graphic off?

JFAB, I peeled all of the graphics off the bike.  I couldn't get the stickers off of the fenders easily, but it needs a new rear fender.  The subframe is bent from PO and the fender is not in great shape.  Will a subframe from a KX250 fit, so I can put a 250 fender on it?  If not what would you suggest to put a 250 style fender on?  thx

I don't know if the subframe will fit. There is a real good thread on putting a 92-93 fender on these K5's. It a sticky in the KX500 section...I just re-read it.

Yeah, JFAB I just read it after I asked you the question.  Maybe I should pay more attention to what's posted in the recent area or do a search.  That is a good thread and I will do the mod.  It looks great and in excellent detail.  B.O.

The newer style Sub Frames do not fit the K5 & keep in mind even if you could get it to fit you would have to deal with the air box & silencer mounting.

Blue Oval The bike  looks great  8-)
You got more accomplished in a few weeks than I could get done in a year!
The Kdx 200 looks just as nice.  I hope you will be happily surprised  with the engine re-freshment.   A little fiddling with the jetting and you should be set for quite some time.
    Well Done!

Tuck, I certainly wouldn't want to mislead or misrepresent what I did/did not do.  I confess that I didn't pull the motor like I said I was going to do a couple of weeks ago.  However, I did put about 2 weeks of hard work into it to get it to this point.  A good cleaning, air box cleaning, tires, chain and sprockets, seat, set the float.....I was just hoping the bike would be like NEW, but you experienced guys on this site certainly knew better.  Who has the saying on the site 'to be old and wise, you had to be young and stupid'    Took it out for a ride today.  Starts great, idles great.  The ride was mostly single track and I really mean single track in our part of the country - rarely out of 1st gear.  It ran fabulous.  It also ran really good on some of the steeper hills in the mid to top end range and came down to an idle after 2 or 3 surges.  But these were very short bursts of WOT.  All good so far.  Then I am thinking the lean problem is fixed with the float level being raised and the jetting is good.  Get back down to the fire roads and open it up with some high speed runs and, guess what, when off the throttle it stays high revving (not crazy high, just "high") and lean for some time.  Engine coming out this week....but it was a blast today!  Will vacuum test it before it comes apart.  The kdx ran awesome, as it is made for the tight single track (my buddy rode it).  Everybody I ride with seems afraid of the K5.    ted

  No worries Blue, :-)
The Idea is to keep the Main Thing, The Main Thing!   For me, it's getting out with friends and family and having a good time... and that my friend appears to be exactly what you all did.
I am probably just easily misled!!
