That feeling of too much compression, is probably the plug firing way too soon. I wouldn't pull start anymore. It has to be timing. Either woodruff key did not hold flywheel, or stator moved while tightening it down. Something is wrong inside that ignition cover. Do you still have the old flywheel?
While you wait on the resident experts to weigh-in on the subject. Questions like timing marks, or coil wiring, or running backwards, you can click on he search option at the top of page and start picking up on tid bits here and there, and understand it and fix it yourself. Then before long you will be telling someone else how to fix their backwards running motor.

I would join a circus and ride it that way.

I have a friend that had a Bultoca, spelling might be wrong, years ago. he was doing a hill climb event and made it almost to the top. The bike rolled back and fired. It was running backwards and away he went back down the hill...so goes the story!

Did this myself back in the early 80s on a kx 125... the stator went bad , so I replaced it with a used one... mmathes up the slots TDC....but wouldnt start so i towed started it, when it started I pulled in the clutch, unhooked the tow rope let go of the clutch and went backwards.....IT was timing... i turned the timing marks did not match... but i got it running frontwards
GOOD LUCK

Thats what I was getting at. Maybe someone thought they are all the same, but its possible the magnets are a few degrees different. Like i said, this has never happened to me, I'm just guessing. You would have to compare them closely. I would take that bike to someone else, or just keep messing with it yourself. It sounds like you are a better problem solver than the bike shop guys there.
Pull that cover, remove flywheel nut, (impact works the best here) see that the key is in the slot, then I'd pull the flywheel and check timing marks.
I think you can use a timing light , somehow, but again I have never ran into this kinda deal to know how to. Guys running an adjustable aftermarket ignition, may be better reference because they time their engines with a dial indicator. Its probably something to do with that flywheel replacement.
