Aint that the truth!

Cool. I'm running 15/48 now, it didn't even blink at the taller gearing. Would a smaller rear sprocket be good for dragging, or is there a point at which the engine starts to struggle with gearing? I kinda doubt it...

Taller gearing only comes into play at high speed. Then the air friction can become so great that the bike will not pull full RPM in 5th. That is why they invented fairings and V-engine road race bikes (narrower). Cam.

We're running 15/37 pulling 2nd gear hole shots , take it up too about half throttle and slide the clutch just bit you'll leave the 4bangers suckin dust. For extended WOF just make sure you're fat enough on the main jet-no white plugs.

I agree. Out on the lake ice, you get a good opportunity to feel exactly how much "gear" a KX500 can pull before you effectively "govern" the rpm's and speed. I was able to pull a max gearing of 15/42 before I felt the rpm's flatten out and not gain any more speed. Remember the KX500's tranny uses overdriven gears in BOTH 4th, and 5th.
