New Exhaust Gasket Needed after removing pipe?

I just took of my pipe (expansion) so I could clean it up and paint it. The copper gasket looks very squished but looks OK. The 2 rubber o-rings are still in great shape and I plan to re-use them. Can anyone share their opinion, experience regarding the copper gasket? Is replacing it a must every time the pipe is removed and re-installed?

hey ,you maid consider using new o rings too
tell you why ,if the rubber o rings have been there for a while.
they get squished too and are not as fat as new ones .
if you re-use them the pipe mouth can start moving in it,s socket.
do this too long and the connection starts to wear out ..
causing increasing freeplay untill it,s not fitting tight anymore
then it will eat your exhaustport-outlet cuss the pipe is harder then the aloy

so always replace rings rubber & 1 copper ring
then you will have a clean sober and good exhaust-area

I'll place my order today. I also searched through the site and found people suggesting to use RTV (heat tolerance sealer / gasket maker type stuff). They said to put a bead between the o-rings to ensure a good seal. What do you think?

kawasaki had made it work without so must we.

this sealant thing is just done much by guys with no or less money,
 or understanding what they,re doing.

just replace the 2 rubber rings and the copper ring every time you remove the pipe.
then you never have to mess around with sealants.

On older bikes or a case where the 0-rings were never replaced the high temp RTV helps make up for some of the wear that the cylinder has taken from the pipe over the years.

I'm trying not to be offended.... this was suggested by members of KXRiders with experience with the K5... not some broke redneck trying to avoid spending his beer money at the parts haus.

Pipes (especially aftermarket) dont always fit our bikes perfectly. I use the black RTV sealant along with (not INSTEAD OF) all the stock pieces for a better seal. It made a noticeable difference in the amount of black goo that was seeping out around the pipe and head.  Besides, it peels right off when you need to remove and reinstall the pipe. If Kawi did everything perfect the first time then there would be a lot less to talk about here at KXRiders now wouldnt there?

I had to tear into my brand new bike to fix the improperly installed starter ratchet spring.  When I was in there I noticed the steel kick start stop was missing.  When I drilled and installed a magnet in my oil drain bolt, I found it chewed up into little pieces in the transmission.

my man Gdubb ..all 3 my bikes happen to have an aftermarket pipe to be precise:

-FMF fatty
-DPR
-MILLET

none of them has the sealant applied ,i personaly simply don,t need it.

maybe this issue is more of a personal interpretation of how things are done
either way i didn,t want to hurt anyones feelings ,thats for sure.

ill stick to my approach ,will respect everyone elses methods 

hughes has it right ,it is used often in older motors where guys didn,t do proper replacing ,
throughout it,s lifetime.
so if they did ..they wouldn,t have to grab some sealant imo .

Thanks for all of the input. I've got the o-rings and just waiting for the copper gasket to arrive. The bike is a 2002 but in GREAT shape, I've never seen any black goo from the exhaust port. Sometimes when the bike is cold (not often in AZ  ) just a little smoke will sneak out, but not enough to leave a residue. I figure after the bike and pipe warm up, the metal expands and seals it tight. I may just use a dab of RTV or similar, even though it probably doesn't need it; just want a good seal

it,s smart of you to replace all the rings.
and the pipes of my rides shoved in so tight like a virgins...
so next to nothing is leaking out of it.

I use Permatex Red high temp with the orings on my older 1984/86 motors cause of wear and pipe fit. Makes a complete seal to the pipe point where the pipe is harder to remove even. No leaks what so ever.

Am I a redneck cause I use high temp gasket maker on my motors? Guess so..............

Put the pipe back on, using new o-rings, new copper gasket and just a thin dab of Honda Bond between the o-rings. The seal is great, no leaking.
