throttle sticking again
« on: September 09, 2008, 01:40:41 AM »
my throttle was sticking wide open on me.  it seemed to only do it when i had it pinned (but not every time).  I would let off/return the throttle grip fully forward/off and it stayed pinned.  After shutting the bike down and moving the throttle back and forth a couple times, I would start it up and sometimes it would still be pinned. I would have to keep working the throttle until I heard the slide in the carb moving up and down, then it would be fine (until the next time).
The cable had some fraying on the carb side so I replaced it and the problem went away until last weekend.  I am going to check out the throttle grip assembly to make sure it moves freely and make sure there are not tight turns in my cable routing and lube the cable again, and check out my slide to see if there are any scratches in it from getting caught somehow and probably put some oil on the sides of the slide after carb cleaning it before i put it back in, and use grease to make a gasket for my air filter.
I also want to replace the throttle slide spring but will not get an oem replacement until next week and am thinking about temporarily replacing it with a hardware store spring or adding a hardware spring in line with mine to give it more push. What are you guys thoughts on this idea for a temporary or possibly permanent solution incase the spring is worn out.
Any other ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

1st thing, don't lube that cable. That stuff goes into carb and will only add to the problem. Remove carb and clean thoroughly. While apart, look at slide operation. Slide should be closing all the way before putting it back together. If it works, other things make the same symptoms. Air leaks like blown base gaskets or lack of fuel will lean them out also. Dirt and sand in the assembly will cause a mechanical binding and hold slide open, but its probably not the spring. Also, check cable routing. Don't want any sharp bends or melted housing against exhaust.
Good luck with it, post what you figure out...

Based on what you say I wouldn't think air leak of any kind, you indicated that the slide  was not going down in the carb, here's my list of what it coulb be.

1. dirt between the slide and carb body
2. worn slide
3. kinked cable
4. cracked throttle tube
5. throttle tube on to far and end coming in contact with the handlebar
6. throttle grip on to far and dragging on the rubber dirt cover over the throttle assy
7. dirt between the throttle tube and the handlebar
8. wheel in the throttle assy sticking.
9. kink in the metal piece on the top of the carb
10 cable frayed (yeah I know it was new)

Ok thats my list of what it could be. I wouldn't think it was the return spring, I've never had one go bad, or even know of one going bad.

good luck

So I did all that stuff, greased the top side throttle assembly (the wheel that the cable goes around), lubed the cable from the top side and let any access drop down with the cable unattached from the carb.  carb cleaned the slide and carb where the slide goes into, put some of my oil on the sides of the slide, put an additional spring that I got at the hardware store (seemed like the same spring I had but not as long) put it in on top of my oem spring, and created a grease gasket for my air filter. And...it stuck again, twice, I didnt kill it this time just pulled in the clutch and kept working the throttle open closed open closed until it stopped (not sure if that had anything to do with it or if it just stopped itself though). Any more suggestions?

A few questions.  Are you using hand guards or barkbusters?  It's possible there is not enough clearance between the bar end and the guard.  Is your throttle assembly stock or aftermarket?  Sometimes the aftermarket setups don't quite work right with some applications.  The cable itself is it aftermarket or OEM?  Compared to the original cable, is it the same length?  I would start with removing the extra spring you installed in the carb and check that the retainer that holds the cable end is installed properly and that the return springs seats flush in the slide.  Check the throttle housing, throttle tube and the cog that fits on the end of the throttle tube for damage or wear.   Does the throttle assembly spin freely when installed on the bars without the cable installed?  How are you routing the cable?  I'm going from memory someone chim in if I'm wrong but the cable goes over the bolt that holds the numberplate on then goes over the top of the CDI unit and on top or inside the tank mount then the cable get held by the white plastic guard/guide that covers the backbone.  One last thing there is a plastic guide in the throttle housing where the cable makes the 90 bend and then attaches to the throttle tube cog, be sure that the guide is installed properly.  There is a dimple on the bottom the lines up with the housing and that the cable sits in the groove.  On my bike I have to gently spread the slit so that the cable sits deep in the groove and the same with the cog.  Other than what Don said above this is all I can think of.

no guards or barkbusters.
stock throttle (i think, bought the bike used)
i got the cable at a kawi dealer in freeport, il and it seems to be the same as the one that was on there.
I believe the spring is sitting good, the part that screws in to hold the needle in place is notched and there is a plastic ring that goes in the end of the spring that has a stub on the inside of it that fits into the notch when rotated correctly.
throttle spins freely w/ no cable
throttle goes open easily and closes it self pretty quickly w/ the spring.

hope i answered everything, thanks for the suggestions
