Pro Circuit Works Pipe
« on: August 25, 2008, 04:24:36 AM »
2001kx125

the guy who sold me my bike said the previous owner had an aftermarket pipe on the bike but had reinstalled the stock one becuase the aftermarket was scratched/banged up.

the bike ran like crap sputtering and bogging

i moved the clip on the needle (that goes into the jet in the carborater) from the bottom most (most gas) position to the middle and it ran better but still some sputtering/bogging, so i moved it to the 2nd from the top and it ran good.

the bike has a pro circuit silencer and pro circuit stickers so when i went to pick a pipe i got the pro circuit works pipe.

i got that on and moved the needle clip back down to the bottom most position and it ran like crap again, the position i settled on was the middle, (1 down/more gas than it was on before i put the header on).

I was under the impression that a pipe/expansion chamber did alot for a bike and if you couldnt get enough gas by moving the needle all the way down, you would have to "re-jet" it with a bigger diameter jet and correspondingly thicker needle.

Does this small of a change in carborator seem normal???

I put the same pipe on my 250 and it resulted in a needle change of one step leaner. You can look on Pro circuit website for their jetting reccomendations.

so you actually moved the needle deeper into the jet/further down/less gas per air ratio?

Yep. It ran good, but when it came on the pipe it had like an extra powerband. It would hit a certain rpm and then start taking off. Leaning it out that little bit made it crispy throughout instead of just adding top end to each gear. I will sometimes go the wrong direction also. I think you need leaner instead of richer, even though that seems funny to add power, acceleration and be reducing fuel. I may have rode it the way it was, but my buddy (seasoned rider) automatically said I need to change the needle when I told him about the hard hit on top.
Its a great pipe. I believe that it is the same as the platinum pipe without the nicer finish of the Platinum's.
If you are asking me about mixture, its 44:1 with Klotz Techniplate.(synthetic) Probably could run 50:1 without trouble, but we are running 6 bikes on the same gas so its one of those things that is a constant so jetting doesn't get any more confusing that it already can be.
Pro circuit reccomended two steps leaner on the needle for my 500 with stock jetting for Pltinum 2 pipe. Stock needle setting was third(middle) Be sure to go back to 1 1/2 turns out on the mixture screw and be sure idle screw isn't turned in too far. That has messed me up before. I had the mixture rich, then the idle turned in, so I loaded up the bike constantly without being off on jets.

Of course user error, what else? Jetting and tune is key to two stroke performance. It seems easy to get wrong even with plenty of experience and reference material. If it aint right you can't be afraid to work on it. If it has been dead on for years, maybe consider other factors. Pro Circuit and FMF both have jetting, mixture adjustment, needle setting for each year and make of bike. Also has stock setting to compare to. That helps if you are not set up with stock jetting due to mods or whatever. You at least know which direction and how far that direction to take it.
You may want to check jets, since it seems you are a little farther off than needle change. If you are finding yourself all the way lean on needle or mixture screw all the way out then you should be re-jetting. (Same if you are going the other direction) Try it with the needle leaner than stock. The main may need to be one step leaner also for PC works pipe if it still has fat condition. Post results, Pro Circuit is the ticket.... 8-)
Woah, looks like PC recommends Changing main from 360 to a 370, Idle jet from 50 down to 45, from 4th clip to 2nd on the needle, and keep it at 2 turns out on mixture screw. I bet that combo works killer. They are the experts. Not me, obviously.
