years ago when i was wrenching at a shop, the guy that taught me how to do forks had a fancy specialty vice for forks.

the first set of forks i did at home took me a long time, like 4 hours ... not fun

Dude, I never thought of that...I have my mountain bike sittin in one now.  I'll try that the next time I service my forks. :mrgreen: :mrgreen:
