Throttle stuck open today!

My throttle stuck wide open today while accelerating up the face of a jump.   I pulled the clutch in and slowed down on the landing (and loaded up and came home!), so I'm okay.

A few weeks ago I went riding in the rain and mud.. my bike was covered in gook.  I cleaned up afterwords, including taking apart my throttle housing to clean & oil everything.  Could dirt have worked its way down the cable and into my carb?  I ride a 1999 KX250.

could very well be. Also, could be running out of gas. Check the carbs and throttle cable. That is scary I know.

I would check to make sure the air filter is sealed  at the base. Make sure you use some grease where it meets the airbox! 

I had that happen to me one time on a go cart and I didn't have a kill sw on so I reached around and yanked the spark plug wire off and I became the ground for the mag! WAHOOOOOOOOO........!!

thanks guys.  there was a little dirt and grit near the end of the cable where it plugs into the carb.  I took everything apart, cleaned it and lubed the cable.  my bike has awesome throttle response now!  thanks again.

Last fall I had the throttle stick several times on my 03 KX250.  Could not make the throttle stick again while stationary and reving it up ??  Seemed to snap back nicely.  Went for another ride through the trails and it did it some more times !!!!  Took apart the throttle assembly and regreased it (it looked OK), pulled out the throttle cable and replaced it just to be safe (old one seemed to work smooth).  Went riding again and it stuck again !!!!  Took full assembly apart from grip to float bowl.  Seems like there might have been a sharp edge on the piston side of the carb slide and I chamfered that and also some rough areas inside the carb where the slide runs.  I used fine emery paper to smooth that out.  No more troubles so far, have rode for maybe 10hrs since.  Please note that this bike has well over 250 hours on it.
