The Troublesome KX125 i own.. Has a cracked transfer port :|
« on: January 20, 2007, 05:32:48 AM »
After speaking to the man who has done work on my bikes engine ( Well before i bought it )

He told me to remove the cylinder head off the KX 125 and inspect the cylinder, the transfer port on the left has a nice crack in it.

Is this the reason why my bike seems to have very little power and constantly missfires ?

Pics to come shortly ! ( NOW AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE )

Oh and should my powervalve look like THIS >>  http://images1.filecloud.com/346620/KX%20125%20Engine%20Problem%20005.jpg    in the exhaust port ? :o

You can see those two silver flaps

As you can see in picture two the port has a crack in the bottom of it.

it could just be me but your pics are hella blurry....

have you done a pressure test???

and yes your power valve could be clogged....

if its cracked take it to a machince shop and have them weld it up!!!!!!

The pics are very blurry yes, i don't know why because the camera doesn't usualy do that.

I havn't tried a pressure test because i don't have the kit.

The bike is being booked into a local bike mechanic next weekend so he can fiddle with it, i don't realy think im up to the job.

I'm thinking you need to have that cylinder welded and then replated. From the looks of the plating, it is just about out of life.

Thanks for the reply Gowen :)

I rang up the bike man today to see if he had time to fit the bike in to repair it,

He said " It can't be fixed ( Welded up ) you will need to find a new cylinder" , which i'm not happy about :(

Would you guys remove the cylinder from the bike and then take it to a machine shop ?

if he told you that over the phone without looking at it that it couldnt be fixed i would take it and have it looked at . I dont know anything about the repair measures for your particular problem but its worth a shot . atleast youll know for sure .

Just from what I see, ,it needs to be replaced. The last thing you want to happen is the port fall apart and into the cylinder. So, I feel the machine shop is correct..

Ebay will have a cheap cylinder for it.

Unfortunately Ebay isn't bringing up any 1992 Cylinders, ive had a quote for ?110 to have a steel sleeve fitted to the cylinder,

Would this work ? Or is it too far gone ?

Once again, thanks for the replys gents. I realy do appreciate the help :)

Check out these two places, I think they can help you out. www.lasleeve.com and www.phatheadracing.com I had a gash in my cylinder wall from loosing a circlip and it was fixed. They bore out the old plating, weld the gash shut and re-bore the cylinder, then send the cylinder out to be replated. My cylinder is back enroute to phathead after it had the 134cc treatment. Contact both those places and if they can't help you then e-bay is your best bet or go here www.bikebandit.com and get a new cylinder.

Sine you are quoting pounds I assume you live in the UK? I have used Stan Stevens (http://www.stanstephens.com/) and I can recommend him. He welded and re-plated my KX5 cylinder and he's got more experience in two strokes than anyone I ever met (sorry Doordie...).

I would not sleeve unless I was forced to.

Hey, he can even tune the cylinder to your liking! (Take pictures after!)

Give him a call.

Yes im in the Uk :)

I was thinking of sending it stan stephens.

Sorry i took so long to reply, i was so annoyed with the KX that i just left it in the shed waiting for me to take it apart :)

I removed the cylinder completely and found a goughe in the cylinder wall aswell :(

Then when i looked at the piston it was cracked in two places ! down the front going diagonally,

It looks to me like its very nearly siezed at one point because there are some nasty marks on the piston where its got very tight.

Today i removed all the powervalve assembly and discovered that the left hand side exhaust valve has some damage to the teeth so i need to import one from the USA Because its no longer available in the UK ( I might just refit the damaged one, its not too bad )

So now i need..

New Gaskets
New Powervalve Seals
Cylinder Repair - machining and replate
New piston , ring , circlips, gudgeon pin.

a bike that cost me ?550 is turning into and expensive bike :(

Why do i always buy the lemons :(

I will put some good pics up tommorow showing the damage to the piston :)

John.
