I ride mostly tight single track with some fast sections in there.Lots of rocks, roots, hills, mud dust,we have her all up here.
The only thing i have done so far is install a 11 ounce flywheel weight, other that she is bone stock.

your on the right track... i have yet to ride the 07 250, how do you like it? it looks like a great handling bike

gearing is the first thing you should do, try to gear so you almost top the bike out as a general rule,

also the ferther away your timing is BTDC the more low end power you can pull

i have been a fan of increasing compresstion, it gives you a ton more low end power as well as power through the rpm range. the down side is it is more dificult ro start and it will create more heat (this is when 83-1010 is great! it can lower temp. up to 50deg.)

enjoy your new bike!!

Two things I think can really make the KX woods friendly.  The 1st, I think most here would agree, the best change you can make is to add a flywheel weight. It really tames the "hit" and gives you a better spread of power (I have an 11 oz weight).  The 2nd in my opinion, it to adjust gearing.  (I dropped a tooth on the front sprocket, and went up one in the rear.)

I ride with a lot of quads.  Its usually slow going, 1st-2nd gear most of the time.  To make it easier on me,   The bike is like a tractor.  It can be lugged through the tight technical trails, but also is a blast to go hill climbing, it just keeps on going...  Due to the gearing changes, I wish it had a 6 speed tranny, as I've lost some top speed, but I'll take the power at the bottom vs. top speed. I don't need to go 100 mph anymore, I'm to d**n old, and it takes a lot longer to heal when something goes wrong...

My son likes the changes so much, he's taken over my 250.

Another thought...  Guys correct me if I'm wrong, (like that's never happened before) but I believe the FMF fatty pipe will also add to the bottom end.

I just added a 12 oz. flywheel weight and it's one great investment.  My '02 250 came with a PC Platinum pipe that's more of a mid-top end pipe.  But with 13/50 gearing and the FWW it's like a tractor.  Can't stall the thing.

Personally, I don't think pipes make a HUGE difference.  I'd toss money at a skid plate, hand guards and other woods bling before I bought a pipe.

So far i love the bike steve,i dont have to many hours on it but i have raced her a couple of times(hare scrambles)and it works well.It is like riding a mountain bike compared to my ktm and i dont get as tired riding it.I did have a rekluse clutch on the ktm and i did like it,i may put one on this bike too.
I owned a 2001 kx250 once and this new one feels so much better, more stable, nicer power and the layout just suits my height and weight better. For now i have the suspension set up pretty well for the bush, surprisingly well for motocross suspension,i am impressed to say the least. With more time on it i might get both ends revalved, for now it is good.

Yeah thats my sons 65, Santa got it for him this past Christmas...he's 8 and also has a KLX110 that we are gonna sell in the near future.  As far as the pipes I love the Gnarly pipe gave me tons of low-end but it did take a little from the top which was fine with me...I hate the "Q"....way to long and had nothing but problems with Jetting...fouled plugs every ride.  I went back to the stock siliencer and haven't fouled a plug since.  I came off a 05 CRF250X and I love the KX250...thing screams when I want it to, it's tons lighter and it just feels better in all around riding postions.  Not only that but the "fun" factor came back, I'm always smiling when I ride it...lol  I don't race right now but I plan on doing some woods races this coming year, my son races but nothing serious yet, he just loves to ride.

I would do everything ssmokem did except for the kickstand (i dont like them) and the Q. Just me. The re-valve would be really handy. Also, if you get the gnarly and hear a vibration/humming sound in the high rpms, do not worry about it.

I agree on both but the kick stand is a must have when you ride with little guys...I was tired of laying the bike on the ground or finding a tree to lean it on when my boy took a "digger".  The father in me just wants to make sure everything is ok with him and to heck with my bike....lol so the kickstand was a must.  And again I hate the "Q" waste of $130 bucks if you ask me...looks like a bazooka hanging off the back of my bike...lol

I'm with you on the kickstand for the same reason.  Now that I have one, I'd never do w/out.  Such a convenience.

Also don't forget about some Vforce reeds.  For woods riding on a 250 the extra bottom end they produce is nice.  Here is what I would add:

Skidplate, hand guards, fork upper guard, rad guards.
Terrain specific tires
lower the gearing a bit (not too much)
bigger tank
Flywheel weight
Vforce reeds
Gnarly pipe (and guard)

I hear alot about these v-force reeds, what about the boyseen reeds,i have used them with good results and if i recall they are much cheaper, just the reeds i think, not the whole reed cage
