Scott's steering damper opinions

<< < (3/5) > >>

Danger4u2:
Dan said today would be a good day to tig weld my steering stabilizer tower.  I had to do some grinding and filing on the tower for the proper fit.  Dan buffed off the paint at the weld site.  10 minutes later I had my Scotts Steering Stabilizer on the bike and working.  Have to wait till tomorrow to test it.  Here are some pictures.  check out his stand he made.

Looks great Danger.  Stabs are the bomb in their domain.

I thought a little warning might be in order about the damper system if you have never used one.  They are most effective at speed (around 50 MPH and up).  From my experience, if you forget they are set at 3 or up and you are looking to make a technical/emergent turn... you might be dusting yourself off and straightening some levers.

Have fun tomorrow !  Sly

Opps sorry, its a Scott's not a GPR.  Anyway, if you set it around medium and towards hard, that's what I'm saying....

delphipro5:
So I have a few Q's about welding the tower and I figured why start a new thread when there is a perfectly fine one right here.

SO I got my frame prepped:

And my tower all ground to shape and cut to length:

That was a pain in the butt! I wish I had better equip. to use instead of a dremel and hacksaw! :-(  it's a little screwy but it should work.

delphipro5:
had to make it 2 posts cuz this thing get's screwed up with long replies.
SO Here it sit's waiting to be welded:

I brought the hight of the tower down another 3mm from that pic. To assure NO BOTTOMING of the linkarm on the pins flats due to flex of the rubber mount handlebars. ( if you install one of these, remember that! )

NOW, my Q is this: IS this frame- cromoly steel- or -just mild steel? The scotts manual says to use just mild steel filler rod.
Now I need to figure out who or where I am having it welded.

IS THIS FRAME CROMOLY OR JUST MILD STEEL?

Polar-Bus:
Here's how I ended up doing mine A buddy of mine who owed me a few favors welded the post for me :

What a HUGE improvement in front end stability ! If I was to only do ONE performance mod to a stock KX500. it would be to add a steering dampener !!!!
