New to the forum with an old KX500
« on: March 27, 2020, 02:18:33 PM »
Hello everyone. My name is Kevin and I live in northern Nevada. I’ve owned several dirt bikes of all the brands, but Kawi’s have always been my favorite. My dad had a KX500 when I was a kid, so I thought it would be cool to pick one up for myself now that he can’t ride bikes anymore (he has MS). I recently picked up a 1988 KX500 in great shape. My plan is to do a full year down and restoration back to factory-like specs while modernizing some parts such as suspension and going through the engine to address any issues.

I can’t wait to learn from all of you guys and your wealth of knowledge!!

Kevin, I am very close to finishing the restoration of a ‘91 KX500 that I purchased in January.   Let me know what questions you might have along your journey.  You picked a great year as ‘88 had significant engine redesigns.  I had an ‘88 250 back in 1989.   Loved that bike.    The bike I purchased and close to finishing is unique and still learning about its history.  The Frame VIN doesn’t match the series sold by dealers.   I have the original Certificate of Origin and was owned by a famous AMA racer in the 80s-90s.   It’s not a 500SR but thinking it was a factory practice bike.

That's pretty interesting.  And thank you for the offer if I have any questions.  I'm sure I will definitely be taking you up on that.

I plan to do a restoration with some tasteful upgrades to the suspension and probably wheels.  I also want to go through the engine and freshen up/change anything that needs replaced.  Should be a good time.
