1991 125 fuel tanks?
« on: February 23, 2019, 04:19:24 PM »
So, I have a swap project in the works but I need some information. I have a 1991 KX125 that came with a huge Clark 3.5+ fuel tank. I really dont need anything that big. I would much rather have something like an IMS or Acerbis that keeps the factory radiator shrouds in place, for this swap I am working on the Clark may not even be usable do to the fact that I may have to lose the right side rad shroud all together. And actually I think I would be fine with something the size of a stock KDX tank for the most part.

So my question is, does a stock KDX tank fit the 91 frame?

Thanks
Mike

Looking on ebay the KDX 125 metal tank looks like it may well will fit but can not see any advantage using one over a standard KX 125/250 1990/1991 plastic tank, looks like it is the same size to me! I might be interested in the Clark oversized tank if you are thinking of selling it?? I may well end up trail riding if my second stab at MX does not go to plan 🤣

Just looked the KDX125 online and that tank does have potential. motorcyclespecs.co says that the KDX125 has a 2.3 US gallon capacity. Only problem is that those were never available here in the US so getting one shipped over via eBay will be an expensive trial and fit... Unless there is someone here on the forum that may be able to send one over for cheap... Hint. Hint.

I still think you would be better off with a standard tank (they do come up every other week and can be polished up like new, i'll find link and add it on here) as look like they are similar in size but the kdx if anything is possibly slightly less (check links), plus you will need to do some cutting and welding, delivery will anything from $40 to $140, if you are determined to go with a kdx tank I would imagine the cheapest way would be to buy a tank on ebay after agreeing to send a bank transfer and then get the seller to mark the goods as lower value so less import taxes and fees!

If I can help I will but not sure how I can other than saying I know the guy that made Dave Thorpes KX 500 SR tank and think I may try and tempt him out of retirement to make me an alloy tank, two may make it worth his while (I have an old tank that can be cut up for templates but has been butchered beyond repair has large hole in the side), that will not be a cheap option at all though may be £550 to £650 at a guess  👍🏼

Ironically I was just reading up on the Farleigh Castle FaceBook page unrelated and not hunting for an alloy tank and saw this not long after the last post!!!

That aluminum tank is gorgeous. I am sure if it was still available it would be a bit to rich for my blood.

You are probably right on the stock tank I had to do a little looking online to find specs. I thought the KX had a bit smaller tank (closer the the 1.5 - 1.8G size) so the KDX tank would only be a slight upgrade from that.

Problem here is finding a stock 91 tank on fleebay for a reasonable price. It seams like 91 was an odd year I can find older bike tanks and newer bike tanks but not the 91. The cost to import from the UK is a bit more than I would like to spend on this project right now. Maybe after it is back together, I have a few miles on it and I know I like riding it.

So then I guess my next question is do we know what other year KX tanks fit. I know the rad shrouds are a big difference but will the 91 seat go on the newer tank. They dont look all that different in pictures. the 91 looks like the front of the seat might have a bit more turn up than the 92-93. And mine looks like it is turned up even more than normal, possibly from the larger tank?

And yes if I do fond another tank I will keep you in mind.

You can use a 1990 & 1991 125 or 250 KX tank, they are the same, the alloy tanks are custom made and are 550 Euros plus shipping 100 Euro to USA so works out at around $738.88, on ebay you can save searches, enter kx 250 1990, kx 250 1991, kx 250 90, kx 250 91 (same for 125) so at least 8 searches in total or more if you can think up other key words may be kx250 joined etc which could make the difference, also add "gas petrol fuel tank" with each search with each search saved, make sure you do individual searches and also tick the box that searches the description, I think you should get one in the USA within two to three weeks, there is one on ebay UK but is a bit over priced and that is before shipping etc, id say it is worth £40 not £100 👍🏼

So 90-91 125 and 250 share the same tank. Good to know. I will keep my eyes open on eBay and see what comes up. aAs mentioned before, I've been looking online the 91's dont come up often.

As soon as I have a replacement I will let you know on the Clark tank, I want to make sure things all line up and fit where they need to be. Especially do to the fact that everything is a bit custom.

KX500.... It is a silly engine swap but not that silly.

Blaster engine. :-D

Cool, if it is a KX 500 engine you might want an April Fool tank 😜

There are some pictures on this link that may help your build

Thanks for the links.

I am maybe thinking of getting in touch with one of our custom grafix company's that supply us with stuff for the RZR's and see what it would cost to have some custom "KXS200 Yama-Saki" grafix made for it...

We'll see...
