1989 KX 125 USD FORKS (Australian Model)
« on: February 02, 2019, 12:17:15 PM »
HI guys, this is my first post/ question on here.

I have just purchased my first restoration project, a 1989 KX 125. This has the 42mm USD forks however the upper forks are in a state of disrepair with the chrome(?) casing peeling off.

Question: What other model forks and/ or triple clamps could I use on this bike? I am open to a traditional/ non USD for option.

Just want to get the bike running for VMX, don't have to be a era correct replica.

Hi Jammer, welcome to the site. If you go to a dirt bike parts website (preferably Australian) and look at the OEM parts fiches, you should get a pretty simple view of the years that got those forks. We didn’t get USD forks on 125s until 1990, and they were a gold color.  The next year they were blue (from 1991 to 1994) and I would imagine they would work without much (or any) modification as the frame didn’t change. 250 models should work on your 125 from the same year range. I would probably just get the entire front end and wheel if I could just to be safe.  After 1993 (and before 1990) the frames changed, and might require you to swap the steering stem from your clamps to that year triple clamps to work.

Hopefully some one has tried that swap and can tell you for sure. Be patient as it may take a couple days to get an answer.
Perhaps I have a dirt bike addiction?

Not sure if 1990 or 1991 clamps will fit but if they do (stops?? stem size may be off??)  the 125/250/500 all are stamped 125 250 500 etc on the underside but are all the same parts, I only found that out as one of my bikes had KX 500 clamps on it so asked questions on here!

That has worked out nicely for me as have ordered some of the KX GURU clamps from Oscar that have the same stops and off set etc to fit up some late forks and wheels on the bike! If you want me to take any measurements of the clamps shout as got them in hand, if the 90 (one year only) /91 onwards clamps will work for you the 1990 forks are gold (UK any way) and are 41mm, the 91/92/93 possibly 94 are 43mm and blue, if you want it to look era correct have them re'anodised silver at the same time you rebuild them, another thing use SKF seals don't skimp there, other years may also work, I think the 95 onwards are silver but I cant help as to what years stops and stems etc might work so might be worth you asking others on here!

Obviously if you want to go all the way with the GURU clamps and later KXF forks you will also need to think about the front wheel too as later models have thicker axels and different spacing 👍🏼
