I am running 16/47 with 17" wheels 150 width 70% aspect ratio which is as near as dammit the same as Brians 14/40.

You don't need a very long stretch of road to rev it out.

you are startin to sound like a 4 stroker.....
I don't know much, but I know one thing is that I gear the bike so its almost topped out by the end of a straight stretch....two teeth on the rear makes a huge difference on a race track......the bike is faster and does better lap times when I gear it more to be on the pipe......the KX500 is a ass kickin mo fo.... then put 17's on it....wow it still makes me smile when I get off it.....I'd like to get another one just for offroad....  I'm ordering a 36 tooth rear and off to the roadrace track I goo.......

the gearing I had was 14/47. And thank goodness I looked, my front sprocket has 2 broken teeth!
