2001 KX 500 upgraded looks and handling?
« on: April 28, 2015, 09:35:26 AM »
Im new to the idea of upgrading to a newer look of my KX 500. I really didnt know that there was a large following of 500 owners. In Oklahoma where im from, there arent many 500 motocross riders anymore. In 2001, i won the Sooner State Motocross Series in the Open Outlaw class on this bad boy. Also seperated my shoulder in the last race of the series as well, i had severe headshake and had poor tire selection for that race. Well i raced for a couple years in the 250cc novice, (this is back when the ratio of 2 strokes and 4 strokes were about 50/50) then graduated to the 250cc expert/pro class before getting landed on from a 80-90 ft triple, end of my racing needless to say. Now i want to bring back the Big Beast, but i absolutely hate the dated design, with all that power you would think they would have kept up with the more modern looks. And i dont think i want to go to an aluminum frame as i have no knowledge of which frames are the best and which aren't, i dont know if i can find someone to do a complete setup, and im sure as hell not paying 12gs for a Service Honda or Kawi. i've read some pretty bad experiences about ppl going to aluminum frames and the frames break in half also.
So here is my question(s):
1. IS there a subframe from any bike model that will fit the KX 500 frame that would allow for the fitment of newer side panels and rear fender?
2. Is there a gas tank from a model that will allow for the fitment of radiators and newer more modern look of plastics and graphics?
3. This question would only be answered if the other 2 questions are good: What seat would i have to use in conjunction with the new gas tank, and plastics, subframe?
4. I saw someone had a 1998 KX 250 subframe and plastics on a KX 500 frame, however he did say that he had a custom made gas tank made. IS this a viable option?
5. IS ANY OF THIS POSSIBLE WITHOUT EXTENSIVE WELDING?

I don't know if you could ever get a hold of him...but our member Neilios did something similar...but I do remember him saying the sub-frame was heavily modified....

Hmmm, that doesn't look to bad. Got questions with the way it looks though...

the right rad shroud looks like its resting on the pipe?
the top of both rad shrouds look as if they stick out at the top where its near the seat?
It looks like he used the original gas tank?? how do you cut it down like that?

I might be able to swing the sub-frame mods though as i know a lot of machine shops..
I guess one could cut the area out of the right rad shroud where it rests on the pipe, but then it might look pretty ugly..

I've got the bike completely disassembled, i'm going to have the engine completely rebuilt as well as suspension mods. i may just stay with the stock look and race the over 30 class and kick some modern butt...

I've loked all day long for anything pertaining to a parts list that would include what you parts can buy, what mods, and maybe even some names. everytime i have found where the bike has clean looking mods, the person who did the mods is either no longer doing it or know one knows where they are at anymore. Very disappointing since i see pictures everywhere of clean looking KX 500 bike mods or Aluminum frame swapping, just cant find the people that do it.

The steel frame conversions look to be much easier than the aluminum ones.  You mostly just need to move the upper motor mounts and modify the head stay.  A 89 and up CR 500 pipe with a KX 500 head pipe will fix the exhaust for you.  There is a section on this site that details a few really nice builds.  It would get you the modern look and ergonomics without a ton of modification.  I'm about to attempt it with my 2007 KX 250.

This is a good build to look at for reference:

but you gotta remember...he did that using the entire KX500 frame...and he may have worked out those flaws since he posted those pics several years ago.
try sending him a PM...

Well I've got a 2008 CRF 250 i bought a long time ago, but the engine is bad. I've decided that im not gonna do any of this, instead im going to go ahead and bite the bullet and shoot for a new bike or maybe one thats a year old. BUT, i need to sell the CRF 250 (BTW, would good for one of you guys to use for a AF conversion) and the KX 500. The CRF chassis, suspension (no leaking at all, like brand new), tires is in EXCELLENT shape, has extra plastics that are good condition along with some other items. Everything on both bikes is in good shape (the fork seals and rear shock on the KX 500 need rebuilt) except for the engines. The KX engine needs a new rod bearings, cylinder re-plated with top-end and gaskets. I would like to sell both of these... IS anyone interested? i can take hundreds of photos if needed, lol...

i just got way to concerned over how i was going to mount everything. And i would rebuild the KX 500 engine my self, but im way too busy and don't have the proper tools. Not to mention ive never been into a crank case before. i have replaced top-ends quite a few times though.
