Cleaning exterior of engine cases.

I have all bearings, gaskets, bushings, studs etc for my rebuild.  My halves are stripped and ready to go. 

I would really like to clean the exterior of my engine halves, it is very dirty.  I have used SOS pads and scalding hot water, aluminum cleaner with 0000 steelwool, and paint remover with a brass brush.
Neither works very well.

Any of you guys got any ideas?

get a hold of Sandblaster....he'll vapor blast them, and make em look better than new!

Wow.  That's great looking stuff!!!  Unfortunately I'm in canada and on a very limited budget. 

I may weld up a cheap tank and try some simple green and water with a bbq under it.

Haha, yah! More like a bit of a swim...and I don't think the parts will float that well.

Hey guys.  Just thought I'd post some pictures of my results.  Life has been busy, but these babies are ready for seals and bearings!

Scotchbrite wasn't quite getting it done, and was leaving aluminum oxide specks everywhere.

Best result was boil cases in a engine degreaser with some vinegar and water.  Then scrub with varsol and stainless steel brushes.  I know its not as good as bead blasting or vapor blasting, but I'm happy with it.

I can see how it would be an issue to get your finger and scotch brite into those small gaps while applying pressure etc, nevermind it leaving specks. Great job, this looks awesome!!!
