Anybody know which years had the steel vs. aluminum valves?

The one obvious difference I see is the 86 does not have the compression reliefs machined for the kipps ports.
The 87-88 do have the reliefs machined for the kipps ports.
But, how can you visually tell the 87 from the 88?

differant head bolts on the 88
{88 has 8mm head studs to barrel not countersunk like 86/87
87 has KIPPS sticker
88 Has KIPPS sign inprinted solid

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I may need to purchase another cylinder for the never-ending project. I currently have an 88 cylinder head to use.  What would I need to do to put the 86 head on my 88 motor using the 88 cylinder head?  Would I just need the 86 head studs, or would I need to buy an 86 cylinder head as well?  Thanks for the help!
