Kick start shaft. 98 and ?
« on: June 10, 2013, 04:32:53 PM »
I need to replace the kick start shaft on my 98 KX250, what all years will work? Also have to put new kicker gears in a 90 model, does anyone know what years are the same for that bike as well?

The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

Thanks for that link. How acurate is that because I have read conflicting info on another site about inner clutch covers compared to that list. One guy says 97-99 only, on another site. I read 94-98 will work on another. The chart says 97-99 as well.

My chart is based on Kawasaki part numbers.
Other years my fit as well, but I can't guarantee it.
You can verify my numbers here:

I'm already disapointed. I just ran my vin for the first time, and my bike is a 99, not a 98. The 2 motors that came with my bike are not correct either. One is a kx250H motor, That is the bottom end that I was supposed to use, and the other is a KX250LE motor. It was taken apart with a hammer it seems.

Don't be too hard on yourself.
The manufactures don't make it easy to figure out what is what.
You might want to look at your cylinder numbers and compare to the chart I sent you the link to.
You don't need any more surprises when ordering parts...

I was just looking at that. The good engine that I have is a 90 model. The 99 model engine that came with the bike isn't worth a dime. Ever case has a crack or whole in it, and there are alot of missing pieces. Even the cylinder has been busted. The good news is that I have my buddies bike borroed right now, and its a 90 model, and needs new kick start gears, so I might be able to get some money for the bottom end I do have. Then I will start saving, or selling, or both to come up with the correct motor.

I don't mind the guy not knowing what he was talking about, when I got the bike from him. That happens. The part that hurts the most is that my bike is a 99. I didn't want a 99. I wanted a 98, which from what I have read is considered the best year kx250 ever made.

But who knows, maybe Iw ill end up with a KX500 motor or something. Time to start doing some reading and seeing wich one is cheaper!

I have rode almost every 90's year KX250.
I never could tell a whole lot of difference from the 98 to the 99.
I wouldn't worry about that.
