Fouling plugs....normal?
« on: September 27, 2004, 11:32:02 AM »
Hiya guys. I have a buddy who just bought a very nice '00 KX250. The previous owner told us when we picked it up that the only issue he has had with it is that it will fould plugs fairly often when at the dunes. My first question was wheather or not the jetting had ever been sorted out. The guy said he knew little about jetting and had always left it the way it was and carried extra plugs to compensate.

So, that said, do any of you know if the KX250 is known for fouling plugs? If not, do you suspect that some carb tuning may be in order here? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

No bike should foul plugs. I had a buddy with a '01 KX250 and I don't ever remember us changing a plug on it, ever. I'm assuming if he is fouling a plug in the desert, that being a WOT area, his main jet would be rich. But, it is hard to say. How does it sound? Is it pretty clean? is the smoke excessive? I have a '97 cr125 and it used to foul plugs on occassion, but found it was the wet crank seal (oil side). It has not fouled a plug since replacing the $7 seal, which took about 30 minutes. Just a thought. How do the plugs look?

Good questions. So far, it revs out very quick and crisply. I have a sneaking suspicion that the previous owner was bogging it quit a bit when at the dunes too. That loads up the plug pretty good if you don't ever clear it out. I haven't done a plug chop yet to see what it looks like, but I will report back when I get a chance to check it out. Thanks for the heads up!

Switch to an NGK BR8EVX, as it forgives a lot of jetting problems.  Most folks run a B8ES because they are cheap, but they just don't last as long.  I give my used BR8EVX plugs to folks I find out riding who have fouled plugs, and have converted a number of riders when they find their bikes run better on a used EVX than on a new ES.

Good Luck.

I finally had a chance to ride the bike in question, and I have to say it runs preety darn clean. It smokes very little, has a bit of shmootz but not too much, and hold a very good idle. My guess is that the kid who had it before wasn't riding it hard enough, and let it load up. I am inclined to change nothing except maybe go with that better plug.....that's a good move for all two strokes in my book. Thanks again for the heads-up!

On the KX250 and KX125, you have better luck if you think of your right hand as holding an on/off switch on this little under powered machines....
