I have a picture of a team bike with the clutch cable routed outside the frame. I think it's the way to go since the cable get less kinks and therefore should  last longer... heres a link with "how to" instructions if you are interested:  http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,11.0.html  (http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,11.0.html)

I'll describe how mine is routed (03 KX500) the best i can.  Sitting on the bike looking forward from the clutch perch over the top of the number plate bolt, then between the upper radiator mount and the radiator, then along the down tube, then between the middle radiator and its mount, then it crosses over to the left side of the engine but stays on the inside of the lower left radiator hose that goes to the head, then attaches to the lower cylinder.  Hope that help you out.
