Post by: badly on October 18, 2003, 08:46:21 AM
I ask this question because i have been reaserching the forums lately for 2 things a new dirt bike for me and a new atv for the wife and the winter months, most of the dirt bike forums like this one are filled with valuable information honest responses and a genuine love for the sport, But the atv forums are for the most part filled with crap, my quad is faster, i can do donuts till i puke ect, ect very little valuable info at all,

On the contrary I think it is pretty evenly split. There a number of really good Quad Sites!

I believe there is a Higher percentage.  Possibly because there is a false sense of security with four wheels?   So sometimes less commitment is applied to Riding,  safety gear,  and the Common sense side of things,  and safety issues.
It's a totaly false sense too of security too,   quads are much more dangerouse on Hills,  just go to a Hillclimb Comp and watch them tumble all the way back down the Hill half the time they don't make it .[to their absolute destruction].

In some places Quads make no sense.  Especialy in places with large Boulders,  such as the extreme Rocky and Boulder strew Woods of New England.  They struggle endlessly just to fit between all the rocks and trees.

4x4 Quads handle the Mud pretty impressively though.

Try and get your wife an Electric start Yamaha TTR 200 maybe.  [Good Luck]

Even the average Woman must be Smart enough to see how much easier a bike negotiates nearly every type of Terrain than any other vehicle?

This devise may widen your Possabilities?

Im not knocking quads, but I think Bensons right.People with little or no experiance feel safer on a quad and ride over there head and most of the ones I run into have no trail manners.I think theres just more begginers on quads than bikes and people who want to "tear it up"but dont want to wait to leave the parking area to do it.But then Friday night I saw a moron or two at the local MX race on bikes. There every where!

I would not disagree with you guys on several of these topics! I see a lot of crazies out in the dunes riding with no safety gear, riding double even triple!  I am not sure they have a false since of security because they are riding a 4 wheelers, which are easer to learn to ride and probably for them safer than mastering a 2 wheeler. If they tried some of the stunts I see them pull on a dirt bike the would have probably already broken there necks. :x

I do know that my wife is a lot safer on her Quad than she would be on a bike even though she has ridden both. Her skill level is much more suited to a 4 wheeler. I ride them both, I love my KX500 and my KFX 700 V Force, when I get tired on my KX, I get on my Quad and I know I am safer riding it, than riding my KX tired. So I ride my KX for 2 or 3 hours and then I ride my Quad for 2 or 3 more. I guess where I ride I see about 5 to 1 Quads over bikes and you are correct I see a bunch more crazies riding Quads! I am sure we all have seen a lot of stupid stunts on dirt bikes over the years!

So I guess my point was that there a bunch of really responsible people out there riding Quads!  :) I just didn't want to let it go by with out giving most of them a fare shake!

Alan :D

PS It is not what your wife rides! Its that does she rides with you and that's really great! :D So let her chose what she is the most comfortable riding! 8)

O.K....Let's be fair.

ANYONE can ride a Quad. While that's a good thing...it's also the problem.

I was just at "The Dam", Mike knows EXACTLY where I'm going here...this is a riding area that's got THOUSANDS of acres of National Forest and BLM Area open to all!

What do the Quad-people do? Why...they ride in the parking areas like it's a race track, OF-COURSE! That's the problem; However, there are some folks on motorcycles, usually little kids, doing the same.

As for Idiots doing "Stupid Stunts" on their Motorcycles? I RESENT THAT...Uh....I mean...what's that Ammendment? The 5th? Yeah, that's it ...I plead the 5th.

Never mind!

Heh.... maybe not more idiots, but more drunks for sure.  Around here the quadders load up on beer and head out to the woods and get blitzed.  Then with a big dose of beer muscles they try and ride about 10 feet over their heads.

HA! I think it's true in AZ too...only we don't have the woods in the desert  8) ...only groves of cacti!  with lots and lots of needles!

I think there is always gonna be a percentage of Idiots that ruin things for the responsible ones.  I ride road bikes too,  and wear full gear everytime I get on any bike.  The kneepads alone have kept me walking several times on the street.  Most people who ride the street think a Helmet is the only safety gear they need.  They ride until they crash once good and get hurt,  then they tell everyone they gave up riding the street because it is too dangerouse.
Not that they gave it up because they weren't seriouse enough to wear gear,  or learn how to ride safe so they got hurt,  that THE BIKE was unsafe.
It's just stupid.
Wear gear,  learn to ride,  know when to open it up and have some fun.

Don't be a Squid.
