Title: Smoky and oily pipe
Post by: jazg on May 06, 2008, 09:38:55 AM
Hey, i just bought a '99 kx125, she runs pretty well and everyting except that theres a cloud of smoke behind me in general and its even worse at high revs.
After a ride theres alot of oil running down my exhaust pipe.
running and oil fuel mix of 32:1 so i dont think the issue is there.
Any suggestions?? :?

your exhaust silencer probably needs repacked. take your  tip off and look in there at the packing i bet it will be saturated with oil. same thing happened on my 2000 kx 250 i had oil coming out of the expansion chamber and spitting oil out of the silencer. my silencer packing was so fubar.

cool, was running a synthetic with 32:1 but will try the 40:1. had the carb out yesterday for the float level and only when it was in and i was about to fire up i remembered i should've checked the jetting. :x
i wana see if i can maybe get the smoking a bit better through mix and jets before doing the packing, otherwise i mite jus be masking a bigger problem and start grinding through packing!
thanks guys :-D

I 'd rather run too much oil and deal with goo than by parts and do repairs.....smoke is what they do.....just don't ride backwards and it won't bother you....Don't worry about global warming, check ut the Space Shuttle next time they launch it....when they fix that...I'll fix mine. Besides it's a known fact the our sun it constantly getting hotter , can't fix that ! ....km

I have a 93 kx 125 and i had that same problem.  I repacked the silencer but it filled up with oil in a couple of hours.  I cut back my fuel mixture to 40:1 and it still had the same problem.  I found that the head gasket was leaking antifreeze into the engine.  It wasn't much at all but I guess the addition of the tiny bit of water to the fuel prevented all of it from burning.  The bike ran great and everything but i had oil flying out the back and getting all over the break caliper and everything.  The way you can check to see if it is the head gasket is to look at the overflow tube for the antifreeze which should run right down the front of the frame and dump out right behind the front fender.  Whenever I reached the upper rpms, a little antifreeze would drip out from the engine putting air into the cooling system.  You will have to have someone else watching to see if it drips but if your bike is set up like mine, the tube drips out onto the front of the fat part of the silencer.  It should leave a stain.  Hopefully your problem is not the same as mine was but the symptoms sound the same.

Its no secret that its some of the worst oil there is! with some fine tuning and good oil you can eliminate most of the smoke and goo and still provide good lubrication :-D

well i stuck with the 32:1 and changed the oil i was using which seemed to help a little bit. I would never have thought of checking the head gasket! thats hectic, gona have a look!
