Title: 2002 KX250
Post by: hughes on June 11, 2007, 03:18:43 AM
Looking at a 2002 KX250 any things to be aware of?? This bike will be used for off road riding not moto cross. It's been around three year since I rode a 250 2-stroke unsure of power. I weight 250 and about 6'1. I know I'll need springs for my weight just not sure if it will have enough power. Anybody my size riding these bikes?

A 250 will be plenty strong. I have a '99 but am at a bit smaller than you. A friend of mine is about 6' and 260 lbs and rides an '03, plenty of power for him, no problems whatsoever. I have a Race Tech 5.4 shock spring I'll sell, let me know if you are interested. According to Race Tech's web site the 5.4 is just right for 250 lbs.

Thanks. I called the guy about the bike and someone is coming by tonight to look at if they don't buy it it's mine. So half to wait and see. I hate the wait and see game.

Yup, you'll definiytly need to respring it at both ends. For trail riding, you may, or may not want to smooth out the 2 stroke hit, i.e. make more tractable, you can add a flywheel weight 11, or 13oz would be best, also you can retard the timing about 4degrees (easy to do), and for more low end, you could add a Gnarly pipe. Oh, and keep an eye on the shock linkage, as the needle bearings need to be greased often, gas from the overflow washes it away. I routed my overflow tube away from that area.

I also have a 99 kx250 and love it.

Thanks for the input. I missed out on this deal for the 02. I was second in line and first man bought it.

Wizzy,
Race Tech has a spring rate chart on their website www.racetech.com. On my '99 it looks like 5.4 is best for someone in the 230 - 240 lb. range.

Team Green specs say to go with a heavier spring if you're over 185. With all my gear on I'm probably 220 and I'm running stock. Then again I don't MX. But I do ride hard and jump it. 250 2-strokes will have enough power for most riders.
