Welcome! As you can see in my title, I'm also a resident Newbie. So, any question you might have, don't be afraid to ask. There are alot of people who are extremely knowledgable.
So, start asking away..

Hey Matt welcome! where are you from in the UK?
You could always gear your KX down and ad some flywheel weight! That would take the edge off of the beast!

hi alan im in london not great rideing! how would i go about adding weight to the flywheel? cheers matt

I spent a few weeks in the UK London Brighton, etc. back in 1965! A kx500 would be a handful in London for sure!
As far as the weights do some searches on flywheel weights! We have pretty much beat the topic to death! :-D :-D Here is one http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,966.0.html

I added a Steahly flywheel weight and I like it so far. I have not been able to get to the track or the wooded trails yet because of the icy weather here in Oklahoma. I did get it out on the street between ice storms. It takes the light switch power band and makes it rev up like a 4 stroke. It made it easier to start. I think it's a good choice for me because I'm just a recreational rider and I have experienced the pain the KX500 can dish out. When I go to the sand dunes I'll take it off because you want the light switch power band in the sand. Here's some pictures, they both show the tool that comes with the weight. Here's a link to Steahly
