Hello there, always a good idea to go through the vitals of the bike so it won't let you down out on a ride.  There are alot of tips to look for while you have it tore down.  Just use the search engine or the KX500 section.

Welcome Stokes, glad you like the big KX500. I bought my 04kx500 new from a dealer in Eastern Ohio. They are the oldest Kawasaki dealer in Ohio called Alex Cycle shop, perhaps you have heard of them. I drove there from Michigan to pick up one of the last ones available new.
I have not yet done any trail riding in Ohio, as Michigan has an extensive trail system that is mapped, and legal to ride. The trails are either Jeep width, quad width or single track, which is handle bar  width between the trees.I prefer quad width so I can use fouth and fifth gears, while missing most trees. Some trails are even groomed and patrolled. It will probably take me a few more years before I have ridden them all and I ride a lot, averaging eighty gallons of fuel a year.
Tell us more about your riding area and how you like to ride. What do you plan to modify on your KX. Any big crashes yet?

Welcome and good luck with the rebuild. I have had my 1998 K5 for about 4 months and have looked it over and have been buying new parts and fixing things up. Like I said welcome.
