Might be a dumb question to ask on a kx site, but here it goes.....The wife finally gave me the ok to start racing. I have a 2000 kx500(original owner), that is all dialed in. About 6 months ago, I picked up a cr500af.....I have it set up for me now....I'm a little faster on the cr, but I'm more concerned with being able to fix anything that breaks rather than dealing with custom parts. I'll be racing the Big 6 GP series in D37. Been riding a dirt bike for 35yrs, but never raced. Just torn between which one to go with.

Custom components be d**ned, dial-in & race the bike you feel fastest on. You'll learn along the way what components are common wear or break items & what you'll need to personally stock (because relying on the shops to get your goodies when racing back-to-back weekends doesn't always pan out). Between the two bikes I love the KX500 engine, but the PWR valve & corresponding bridges around the PWR valve area in the cylinder are prone to cracking when you rack a lot of time on them, even with meticulous maintenance (they're paper thin). There are no powervalves on the CR to contend with.

I hear ya, if it was strictly desert, I'd lean towards the kx. Being gp's, the cr is way more nimble. Now just a matter of seat time. My biggest obstacle is gonna be the track section....I'll definitely be making my time up on the off-road section.

My dad told me I had to wait until I was 14.....at 14, my football career was #1....so dirt bikes stayed recreational. Now at 42, the time has arrived.. :-D
