some pics of the new project I think its a 85 125 going to fix her up for the wife to ride and i will use it as a second bike for fun
(http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/b501/ben_brown5/2014-07-16121547_zpsc3fb2bc0.jpg)
Shes a bit rough around the edges
(http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/b501/ben_brown5/2014-07-16125135_zpsa356f7c3.jpg)
But complete . Will require a full rebuild still turns over but not much comp.
It will keep me busy for a while and I couldnt let her sit any longer so I offered 100 bucks and the owner said take her..
-
bikes apart now couldnt help myself the piston is shot and has no ring at all. the cylinder looks good head has a small mark on it where something (ring) has hit .
The piston doesnt have a number just the arrow does that mean its stock?

not necessarily....best way to tell what you have is to mic it.
-
here's a few fine parts for the build if interested...
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=1985+kawasaki+kx125+nos&_osacat=0&_from=R40%7CR40&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313&_nkw=1985+kawasaki+kx125+nos&_sacat=0
-
piston is 55.95 std range is 55.945 - 55.960 . Now what to do with the cylinder it looks fine to me but im a little confused as some people say i can do this others say i cant touch it. can i just order a 56 mm piston. thanx remember im new to dirt bikes but not completly stupid ;) thanx guys.
-
more than likely you could probably run it through a hone real quick and call it good...providing it's within spec also.
otherwise, you'll have to have it bored.
-
thanx fox i will take cylinder into town tomorrow as i can only measure with my verniers at top and bottom. I will get some figures and see from their need to split case anyways so im not in to much hurry just trying to keep myself occupied as it stops me from drinking so much hehehehe thanx
-
it stops me from drinking so much
these words put into this phrase should be banned from this site
-
what kind of piston are you planning on running...cast or forged?
forged will need .005 clearance between piston/cylinder.
where as cast can be tighter.
I highly recommend going with forged.
-
i was just going to see what u guys say when it comes time to buying that ;) needs some bottom end work the previous owner has pulled it apart and i have a container with some random parts 1 has got me scratching my head Ill take a pick of it
-

any ideas what this is ?
-
found it clutch pushrod cant see the clutch working without it either lol
-
yup that's it.
-
I figured it out you just have to go for it, The shift mechanism had been pulled out and in a tub i managed to find all the parts and put it in the way it looks in the book then the clutch back on and it all works, every gear is their and the shifter even returns back to normal spot, Happy days on to the next part
-
Parts are rolling in cylinder is ready piston rings little end bearing engine is almost ready to go back together :)
-
nice!...what ended up being done to the cylinder?
-
Very nice! Make sure you check the ring end gap. Those 125cc are picky
-
whats a good figure i can check it now doesnt give me any specks on piston box only piston to cylinder clearance which is spot on
-
the manual I have for an 88 gives a useable range of .15mm-.35mm ring end gap.
you could call your local Kawie dealer to double check on the 85, but it should be compatible...but don't hold me to that.
-
cylinder was measured and came back within specs this bike has never been rebuilt first piston still in bike which is a bit hard to believe but the previous owner has had the bike from new, I just deglazed the cylinder like u guys told me to local Kawasaki shop said the cylinder is better than most 2,3 year old cylinders :)
-
0.15-0.35 and the shop checked it and its 0.19 :)
-
perfect!! :-D
-
yeah im getting a bit excited like a kid at Christmas :-D
-
yup, I thinks it's safe to say we all feel like kids at X-Mas once the new parts start rollin in
-
trying to figure out if newer model radiator will fit mines a bit busted up, Holds fluid but isnt gona look the part with all the new stuff on it
-
yes i have got a set of new rad for the 87 250 but the 85 125 only has 1 radiator and i cant find new item
-
yeah sorry about that, got confused bouncing back and forth from your other thread....the 84 and 85 125's share the same part#'s for the radiator...but again, that doesn't mean another year/years wont fit.
-
Ill let u off this time  Just have to keep searching or i will custom make something maybe 250 seat and tank with twin 250 radiators and shrouds wonder if that will fit hmmmmm more coolant wouldnt be a problem I wouldnt think
-
there's a few used ones in here....
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.X1985+kawasaki+kx125+radiator&_nkw=1985+kawasaki+kx125+radiator&_sacat=0
you could always go to a local radiator shop and either have yours repaired...or, if you feel like dishin out the cash, you could have them make a complete new one by using your existing one as a model for them to go off....and they could even make it a touch larger if you give them fairly accurate measurements....just a thought.
-
your search shows a lot more than mine even when i click on international some sellers will not post to Australia :(
And yes I really want a new one, Might take the old one into town and se what our local guy can do or I can send it to Melbourne where their is lots more options Ebay is my best option I live out in the country not much here.
-
All the nice builds on here made me decide to pull the 125 all the way down and start from scratch heres the start point
(http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/b501/ben_brown5/DSC06942_zpse29e122c.jpg)
-
Atta boy....that's the only way to go!
-
Hey guys do I use a gasket sealant with the clutch case or just the gasket :?
-
just the gasket should be good, unless you've noticed it leaking before.
-
never had oil in her yet but both mating surfaces look good thanx
-
a great piece of advice...if you use the Cometic gaskets, they're rubber coated aluminum, and the rubber acts like a sealant...I've even re-used my clutch cover gasket on my 250 3 or 4 times now.
-
squish clearance piston to lowest part of head is aprox 1.3 mm ? 1985 kx 125 is that gona do the job?
Thanx Ben
(http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/b501/ben_brown5/DSC06965_zpsec8c4fe4.jpg)
-
1.3mm? want to screw this head on and move to next part any help plz 8-)
-
Frame is done heres some pics
(http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/b501/ben_brown5/DSC06967_zps4166f876.jpg)
-
1.3mm = .051" for those of us in the USA
-
yeah soz still use mm here in oz
-
Progress report engine is in frame yaay!!!
-
Looks like a real work of art...
Keep those pics coming.
-
New swing arm bearings should be here next week and Im thinking of buying my own press as their is no work shops close to me it will be a great addition to the shed anyway these are cheap but i think it will do the job
http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/SCA-Shop-Press-H-Frame-6000kg.aspx?pid=214467#Cross
-
I've been using that same style of press for about 10 years.
For most bike needs it does a great job.
-
Anyone no what fuel cap can be used to fit the 85 kx 125 or has anyone got one? Some guy on ebay says the 87 250 fits the 85 125 but no it doesnt. The thread on the 125 is much finer than the 250. My bike came without the cap :|

Question.... Is the 85 125 seat the same as 85 87 125-500?
Seat cover came in mail today says 1985-87 125-500 doesnt even come close to fit :x with a month turn around on new item geez
-
where did you get the cover from?...they should take it back if it's incorrect.
CEET Racing has always been good...and I just recently got one from EVO for my 500 that fit perfectly...here's the thread,

http://www.ebay.com.au/usr/motomart-superstore?_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2754
Im waiting to hear back from them I looked on the ebay site and can see that they make the same style and color seat cover for a 90 91 I think they have sent me that one not the one Im after.
This bike is intended on being used by the wife and she has her heart set on a gripper seat cover or I would use the OEM style that are available, I like the gripper seat too

I bought a cover from them a couple years ago...it was a great product and fit perfectly, and I still have the seat...
it didn't have the "KX" logo on it...I had to make a stencil from my OEM '00 seat and dye it on...it was non-gripper, as I like the freedom to move around on the seat.
-
Shes close now lots of things I would do different next build but having fun along the way

-
How are your power valves? I have a NOS 85 valve if needed.
-
thanx Queen I bought a set when i first got this bike as I new I would have problems. To my surprise the power valves were the only thing in the engine that didnt really need looking at just a good lube up and all was good so I have a spare set now
But thanx
Spare valves came vavles alone allthough the pic describing them showed the whole lot. Tiny little suckas these 125s

yup, everything's so much more "relaxed" when beer is included in the activities. :-D
cover looks good!

first ride today took it really easy just putted around the on the dirt road. Still no leaks :-D
The engine seems to cut out for a split second like no spark. If the bike is running in gear it bump starts itself it like hesitates for a second would that be a bad earth or bad connection somewhere?

Could very well be a bad ground or connection.
You have to start at the beginning and work your way through the system until you find the problem.

yup, like sandblaster said.
on Sunday, I noticed my pipe was just starting to leak black spooge through the red RTV at the cylinder...so whilst I had the bike torn down some to seal the pipe back up, I figured I'd toss in a new plug too.
when I pulled the wire cap off the plug...I noticed it came off with ZERO effort!!....that was because the threaded nut cap on the plug had come loose and was stuck in the wire cap....so basically, my connection was just "floating" around.
I never noticed any ignition problems, but eventually I'm sure I would have.
so on the new plug, I removed the nut cap 1st, and put a drop of red Loctite on it...we won't be having that issue again!
-
Yeah I have pulled all the electrics out and tested to the best of my ability and found some errors.
It All got sent to Melbourne (which mean Money) to be rewound and test the rest. I have cleaned all connection points now some were really bad ordered a new plug lead too.
Hopefully in a week or 2 I can finish running her in thanx guys.
PS still trying to find a rear wheel I have no rear brake and cant hand it to the wife like that
-
PS still trying to find a rear wheel I have no rear brake and cant hand it to the wife like that
huh...I thought someone found one for you??
-
that wheel wasnt any better than the one I got wasnt prepared to pay 250 for a wheel that needed repair too I just keep looking
And it needs to be a complete wheel with the drum brake on it too
-
Got my wheel a KDX 200 one and I even got mud on her now. Selecting all gears and is a powerful little bike. It is no good for the wife to snappy she rode it and hit band in 2nd and said its not for me lol
(http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/b501/ben_brown5/DSC01562_zpsb7219f3a.jpg)
But my little brother loves the bike he is only 17 and has a crf 150 07 wants to swap me bikes hmmmmmm what to do I could allways paint the crf green
-
Keep it and look for a 500.. Then you'll have a 3 piece set.

keep it...run it into the ground... NOS parts are gonna be non-existent soon anywho...then when it's dead, part it out and make a few bucks.
-
yeah it wont ever leave the family my brother comes here every 2nd weekend and just wants a bike to ride around the farm the crf is too small and tame for him and I think the crf is a better bike for Kath to ride so i will keep it but my bro will ride it for now. Its a fun bike to ride but the 250 is better for me just glad my first 2t build started and runs great thats it 4 me Im off ridding today braaaaappppp!!!!!!

Another thing the KDX runs a rear brake that is slotted out to hold in place with the swingarm and the kx has a floating brake thats connected to a rail that runs under the swingarm. As their was some confusion earlier with the fitment of the wheel it is just the brake that was different and was a simple fix (the kx brake drum slides straight into the kdx wheel). Thanx for all the help more than happy with the results Ill post some more pics with the good plastics and original (style) graphics. I just pulled the 250 cylinder yesterday for a freshenup Ill keep yas posted .

looks great!...nice job.
I would suggest a crossbar pad on the handle bars....it can get a lil painful if your head slams into it for whatever reason

I thought it looked a bit..."off" :-)
still looks pretty good...clean for an '85.
-
the original rear fender I found out is actually a 89? It just never fit in their properly and all the 85 ones I see dont have their arse up in the air like mine.

and all the 85 ones I see dont have their arse up in the air like mine.

had my first enduro Sprint in the pre 90 class had a awesome day lost the rear brake bike was dying if I leaned it over into corners. Fixed all the problems and won my first event..
