Hi guys, tom here, just picked up a 92 kx 250 today for cheap, it has a few things that need to be fixed but that's why the price was right, I'm pretty good at fixing 2 stroke machines, I have a ski doo sled and yamaha banshee that run like tops, I'm new the kawasaki scene but I'm sure with some research and advice I can figure it out.
Here's a pic:

I'm in Ontario Canada

ahh, you've been right in the heart of the extreme cold that's been filtering down into the U.S., making it one of the coldest winters in history here.
I've never been to Ontario, just Toronto, Quebec, and Montreal...love it up there.
-
Welcome Tom.
Foxx has it right, there is a ton of info on here and a lot of combined experience..
Use the search first, then ask away..
Post lots of pics of your progress :-D

Too funny!! Toronto is in Ontario. the capitol, in fact.
I too have been to the tippy top of the CN tower.
Greetings from Montana Tom. Braaap

Thanks for the warm welcome guys, just a note though Toronto is the largest city in Canada. Ottawa is the nations capital, :)
I'm gonna use the search but if I can't find what I'm looking for I'll post in - different thread,
My first problem is the kick start slipping, I'm assuming that's a common problem lol

you're right it is in Ontario...but it's not the capitol.
alcohol does wonderfully strange things to the mind/brain when mixed with strong pain killing narcotics ...I never went up the tower as far as I can remember...see'ins how I was only 6-7yo then.
-
I meant the provincial capitol. Toronto, Ontario.

2 reasons: the ratchet is worn out over the years... or the spring makes to less compression... i would say: buy a good used kickstart-assembly and replace it...
here you could compare, which years will match : www.cmsnl.com
than look at first to www.oem-cycle.com before ebay... thats sandblasters shop you could pm him which parts you need...
-
Kickstart Ratchet part# 13078-1063 about $45 brand new
Ratchet spring part# 92081-122 about $5 brand new
Kawie does have these listed as "in stock".
yeah, you're the 3rd person in the last week and a half that's had the same exact problem. The spring is a fine wire that gets sacked out fairly quick....and being a 20+ year old bike, the ratchet is probably worn as well.

I think this cir clip fell off, everything looks good

definitely get a NEW snap ring(s)/cir-clip....others will agree on this....but while you have it apart, spend the $5 bucks on a NEW spring as well, for assurance....the one that's in the picture

Funny you say that cause I have parts galore lying around from various builds, I just happened to find both those things in my bin, slapped it all back together and now it kicks like new. No slippage. After all the years these bikes have been made in really surprised no ones come with a solution for a better design on this, weird
Anyways, no it's time to clean carbs re jet replace reeds with some VF 4's.
I have my work cut out for me, havnt even rode it yet lol, bought it today at 2:00
-
sweet...sounds like my toolbox/shop, TONS of extra new parts layin around from various year bikes and makes.
I wasn't aware v-force made a "4" for the Kawie 250...I know they do for the KTMs and Yamaha Banshees/Blasters :?
-
Oh I don't know if they do either, I was just assuming, I have them in my banshee.
One more problem I need to get done and this is where I'm not very good, the bike will roll in N fine but when you put it in gear and pull the clutch it won't free wheel, what's the deal here ? Micro fiche says 7 plates, this appears to have 8
(http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r651/tdod101/78B03C4F-1EB1-4A15-BEAA-75ACEF2953DE_zpsfetr54ry.jpg) (http://s1360.photobucket.com/user/tdod101/media/78B03C4F-1EB1-4A15-BEAA-75ACEF2953DE_zpsfetr54ry.jpg.html)
-
it will have "some" resistance when the engine's cold, every bike I've ever had has been like that....I'm willing to bet it'll roll in gear much easier with the clutch in once it's warmed up.

this was a question/problem in a different thread not too long ago....someone had bought an aftermarket clutch, and ended up having to use 1 extra plate to make it work correctly....let me see if I can find it.
-
here it is...not sure if it'll be any help, unless you know if you have a stock or aftermarket clutch in it...

alright, I just checked Kawies site....
Friction plates are part# 13088-1089-and says there's 8 of them.
Metal plates are part# 13089-1066-and says there's 7 of them.
see if you can confirm that...I can see you have 8 friction/fiber plates in the pic.

Okay, give me 10 minutes to take it apart and I'll report back
-
I have 8 & 7, so stock I guess
-
yeah sounds good....as far as the hard rolling with it in gear with the clutch in, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it just yet, get some fresh oil in there, and once it's been run and warmed up see how it is....I've had several brand new KXs and CRs over the years, and a little resistance is normal.
-
Cool! What do these bikes call for tranny oil ? I just use manufacturers reccomendations.
-
a lot of us are running Ams-Oil 10-40....I used Bel-Ray Gear Saver for years....but it just gets too d**n expensive.
the manual will call for 10-40 or 10-30, either is fine.
-
Yea, I figured motor oil, the banshee takes 10w30, so maybe a bit heavier on this one than. Alright, thanks for your help, if the problem persists I'll give you a pm. Thanks dude
-
cool...no problem, just pay it forward , don't forget about the "search" option too...there is sooooo much good info on this site that'll be useful to you, going back 10+ years.

some things look good and after reassembling it would still not work..
you need definetely a new strong circlip and new spring... i added a wascher for more compression to the ratchet. but watch out, that the ratchet can still moving free on the shaft by the return to top. and also take care to the marks on the ratchet and kickstartshaft. thats important for assembling and the function...
to your clutch problem:
some times when bikes are sitting longer unridden in the garage, it could happen, that the clutch plates are like glued to one part and then the clutch could not work, also if all other parts of the leverage work in the right way.
clean the plates from the old oil, reassemble it and i rather to motul transoil 10w30 , that i use over years without problems. i tested many oils to find the best.. :-)

check your PMs tdod101....pics sent.
