Oh the bastard thread , I must be really sick if I'm in here :mrgreen:
I'm actually thinking of getting a smaller bike that doesnt beat the s**t out of me, since a new berg is so far out of reach it's not funny, I think I'm gonna try to find an older kdx. Anybody got any recommendations? Think I might wanna replace the XRL with it, so street leagality input would help. I'm in Utah so registrations easy my concern would lean toward the stator lighting side of things. I'm not looking for true night running just inspection. Even this thought counts on winning the lottery, oh I hate the $ drain of the holidays.
I had a kdx 175 as a kid that I bought for like $50 & sold for $75 that I never "touched" so I'm assuming theyre like a honda car "not enough power to blow themselves to hell"

The KDX is the Honda XR of the 2T world. E ('89-'94) or H ('95+) series bikes are all great bikes. I think the E's are the most comfortable (yet with old school ergos) for all day riding but either is better than ANY newer bike when it comes to comfort. E's also have a slight power advantage over the H's and a better gear box spread IMO. Aftermarket parts, and some factory parts, are starting to be harder to find for the E series but, as you can see by '90 white/blue thread, I recently rebuilt mine from the ground up with no problem.
I don't know what registration requirements you have in Utah so I hope this is helpful. My bike is street legal per AZ law. Headlight, brake/tail light, and a horn are all that is required. I ran a 35 watt head light bulb, two cheap Autozone 1157 LED bulbs (soldered together to work and fit under stock tail light lens), and a $12 horn from FRP, all on the stock stator. BTW, the stock stator is 35-40 watts max. The horn didn't work well at idle with the lights on. Otherwise, the lighting worked great. I rode it for almost two years that way before upgrading everything. Also, I don't care what gearing you use but these bikes become really buzzy when running speeds above 40-45mph. Keep at 40 or below and it is a happy camper on the street. FYI, I run 13/48 gearing. Also, you can rewind the stock stator yourself and get about 70 watts at idle and over 100 watts at speed. I literally just book marked the page you suggested. I'm also leaning toward an earlier bike, square tube just doesnt seem as strong as round tube . & I like what you said about old school comfort, I need a real seat for what I'm thinking.
Know anything about big bore or stroker's. How hard can you breathe on a KDX

I just received my spool of 18 gauge copper wire. I plan to do this up-grade on a 96'kdx I'm spiffing up. If it works well, I plan to up-grade my Moose 75watt in my kx500.

Yeah, I can ride all day on my E with no problem. The ergos and couch type seat make it super comfy.

You can do quite a bit on them. I did pretty much everything except for porting and a BB kit. Pipe, reeds, RB head and carb mods, Jaguar ignition, etc. I haven't felt the need for a BB or porting as my engine has plenty of power. I can run with my buddies on the trails with ease who ride new KTM's (200, 250, 300, and a 525), Honda 450's, YZ250, and Husky TE310. They only time it would be nice having more power is long straightaways and deep sand washes. However, the downside of the mods to get more power is just not worth it IMO.
The largest BB I have seen is 240cc but you lose your power valves and, IMO, that is just too steep a price. Plus, to rebuild the top end down the road, piston/ring costs more and is limited to who you bought the BB from. I have never heard of or seen a stroker for the KDX. I would guess that you might be able to get someone to stroke it but there isn't much room in the case as the KDX 200/220 are already a bored and stroked KX125 engine. Finally, I know Eric Gorr and Jeff Fredette do port work on the KDX's. I have heard you can get some noticeable gains from it but I haven't tried it.

Just make sure to seal the windings or it will short out pretty quickly from engine vibration. Don't ask me how I know. I used MG Chemicals Super Corona Dope on my second rewind.

I plan to up-grade my Moose 75watt in my kx500.
I was thinking that when I read about it for the KDX, You'll have to let us know how that works. What was it like 87 volts @ idle with a simple rewind
Loosing the power valves totally wouldnt work. I really shouldnt try to go crazy with bore or stroke as I'm wanting something for long rides man handling it through hours of rough stuff.
Wait I want some Super Corona's & Dope :-D
