Title: Which year KX ??
Post by: Dangerouspower on June 14, 2012, 03:28:09 AM
Hey guys Im new to this forum but Im on many others. I am currently riding a 99 KX 125 and I love it! I am really starting to get into full rebuild projects after my 03 Z400 and my current one 86 LT250R. This fall/winter I plan to have the lt250r build done and have sold the kx125. So then I can build 2 kx250s.  The plan is build 1 for mx and hare scramble racing and the other as a trail rider/hill climber. I guarentee that I will be trail riding/hill climbing more so that will be my main bike. I want a special bike for racing so I dont have to worry about it breaking it during a race and then next weekend not being able to go ride trails and hills with my cousin.
OK so to the question. I need to know what year(s) will be best for racing and what year(s) will be best for trails/hill climbs.
1 problem though. I will only have the money I get from the kx 125 when I sell it which will be like $1200-$1300 I HOPE + a couple hundred more ($200). I guess there is 1 more problem too, newer kx 250s in my area like 02+ are WAY to exspensive for my buget. I see a fair amount of 90s kx's though that I could probably get... Heres another thing, I am constantly on Thumper Talk and have read stuff about guys building the perfect trans for what they need to do by taking diffrent parts from multple years of kx's. I could do that too or at least try like hell.
So what do you guys think ?

The 98 KX 250 had an incredible powerband, plenty of down low and enough top end, defineately one of the better KX 250 motors. If your going to MX it, I would surely get something newer, the suspension is head and shoulders better.

I was told on thumper talk 94-98 for woods riding. What do you think of the 99-04 bikes for suspension ?

it could be made to be pretty good, and you could put newer forks on the bike, you could do a different shock as well but that would mean replacing the clevis or drilling the existing clevis. Tom Morgon did a 99 kx125and 250 suspension for me, they were incredible.
