i have just had a 1993 kdx 220 almost fall into my lap :-D. i was planning on breaking it. but when it showed up i thought i might fix it up and use it. so i had a look for a piston on ebay wiseico ect ect. and i cant find 1. does any 1 no the story with this. can find loads for 98 on and loads for 200 and 250 but none for the early 1s :?. i will post some pics of the bike tomorrow. any help with this would be good. thanks in advance

i have just found, via a registration check that it is a kdx220SR if that make a difference

I don't think they made the 220 here in the states back in 1993 & might be the reason for the problem, working from the phone now, will check on the big computer when I can.
Hope it's that simple,

I just checked, 1997 was the first year here.

I believe the top end is the same design as the 89-94 kdx200. I know the trans is geared way different. Post some pics of the engine. I'll keep searching for parts/info. Might be able to call Fredette Racing or RB Designs for info too.

the guy says its a 94???. when i do a random google search 'kdx220sr' i seem to get a lot of japanese pages come up. is this thing a jap import????. i will get a load of pics up today. thanks again

ok heres some pics, not the best but should give an idea. the power valves look different to an kawasaki i have seen before. as far as i can see the only parts missing are: piston , power valve link/gear and the power valve cover. i have looked at the kdx 220 97 part list and it all looks the same as this. found a sticker on the chassis and it in japanese so i think it an import but is registered in this country on a 93 plate but registered from 2001 i think (did online vehicle check). see what you guys think, shall i shred it or fix it :evil:

I can tell you for sure that the top end parts are not compatible.
My Dad sold a top end to a guy in the UK and ended up having to take it back.
It was a expensive lesson :-)

It was a 93 as near as we could figure out.
Those directions look hard but it is really easy.
After you do it a few times it only takes a few minutes.

Looks like the the powervalve setup is the 95+ style. I haven't been able to find anything for the SR yet. This is more difficult than putting a trans back together for the first time with no pics lol.

just measured the bore quickly with a tape measure and it is looking like its 69mm same as the 98-05 so the late piston should be ok :|

called the main dealer today, its defo a jap import. they said they have the piston kit in stock in stock ?150 :-o. looks like its do-able. there are loads of wossner piston kits for the 98-05 on ebay at ?90. not totally sure they will fit but i will take a chance i think

Just take a lot of measurements of the old piston and compare them to the new piston before you install it. If the measurements are too far off you may be able to return it. Main thing I would be concerned with would be pin location and skirt length.

thats a good idea goat. problem is i dont have the old piston :lol:. i will just have check everything and measure the squish ect. well if i decide to do it that is. the missis thinks i am dangerous enough off road she dosent think i will fair too well with cars, lorrys and buildings chucked in the mix . not to mention the police :evil:

Without a piston to go by I guess it's just trial and error. I would imagine it would be the same parts as the 98 since everything else that i can tell from the pics is the same.
I tend to go a bit crazy off road myself. Honestly I think that kind of experience has kept me out of more situations on the street than I can count on my fingers and toes. People are too busy doing more "important" things than driving. I have had to punch quite a few passenger windows because people don't look before merging in the next lane. I can go on and on for days about peoples driving skills (or lack of)
