Oh boy, well to start with every state has different laws so head to your local sec. of state and ask for a on-road equipmment inspection form, a assembled titling form, and a ownership certification form. Now you are about to start your wallet draining project with the list of costly items they give you on those forms. Here in Michigan a $500 fine and impound cost for first time offenders has driven many of us to that same question.Michigan regulations state the following:
head light (high&low beam)
horn
speedo
tail light/brakelight
license plate light
left side rear view mirror
DOT approved tires
Ok, then comes writers cramp, OH YEA ,you must write out how, where and when you bought and installed or modified this motorcycle on a ownership certification form. The next step is to stop at the local police station and have them inspect the bike and sign these forms. Now you need to go back to sec. of state with your OFF-ROAD VEHICLE title and file for a new " ON-ROAD VEHICLE TITLE " and now they will send a new "ON-ROAD VEHICLE TITLE" and a "STATE MADE" vin tag in about 8-10 weeks. Now you can call and ask your state police where and when they would be able to apply to your new vin tag on your "RE-Titled" motorcycle . Nope!! your not done yet, call and fight to get your insurance company to sell insurance to you for your " RE-TITLED" motorcycle (they don't like that) and then head back to the sec.of state apply for your plate . You almost think they don't want you to do this don't ya ?
GOOD LUCK, and no I have not received my new title or tag after 3 months
