Rick:
Yup, my brother used to wear his old army boots to ride, thinking he had plenty of protection.  Once he healed from the surgery to fix the four broken bones in the top of his foot when his toe clipped a rock and wrapped his foot around the footpet  , he purchased an inexpensive pair of riding boots.  Cheaper than the insurance deductible...

kawdude:
I totally agree.  Tennis shoes didn't cut it so I've moved on to thicker soled shoes.  The problem with riding boot is that they are not design for people with thick (fat) calves.  I never found a boot that I could wear comfortably.  Now if they designed a boot that didn't come up so far then it wouldn't be a problem.  The worse accident I've had in regards to my feet was when I was riding thru ditch at about 30mph and hooked a culvert with my right foot.  d**n near ripped my leg off.  That was probably 15-20 years ago and I still have problems with that hip.  I do understand the risk to not protecting your feet and ankles but is there a shorter boot available.

mikesmith:
You need a pair of Gaerne RX-2's,Bob's cycle  supply has them for $159.99 and they will fit the BIGGEST calves around,so try a pair before you pay a lot more for a plaster boot.

Rick:
Heck the worst foot injury I had wasn't near that bad.  I was practicing for a two day ISDE qualifier in the trees, and got a little too close to a big stump on the rear brake side.  Hit the stump with my peg, ripped the peg clean of the frame, weld and all, leaving a big hole.  The peg must have hit my foot, as I had a clean cut on the inside of my boot just behind my big toe, with a cooresponding one inch cut in the side of my foot.

To get back to camp, I ziptied a big green limb to the bottom of my frame, extending it out each side under the footpeg on one side, and AS the footpeg on the other.  Made it all the way back to camp, but didn't want to spend the money on stitches.  Left an ugly scar.  Still raced the ISDE the following weekend...with much foot pain.

I hate foot issues.

Paul:
Big calves? I got those and the Sidi's with ACS are the way to go ;)
