Hi every one! Iam a new member to this site. It is fanatastic! I just purchased an 02 KX 500 with less than 2 hours on it. Forgive me but, I
have been doing the 4 stroke thing the last few years. XR650R and CRF 450. Great bikes but nothing feels better than the rush of a big bore 2 stroke. Only problem is my bike is a turd. My son beat me in a drag race on his CR 250 and a friend beat me on his CRF 450. I've just started
work on the bike. Tore it down and inspected it. ring gap is as new.Piston to cylinder clearance the same. No air leaks. It feels good til about 4,000
rpm then it signs off. kips valve seems to move good with engine running.
Stock pipe and jetting for now. anybody else have this problem?
Paul:
Welcome to PBR. I'm sure we can get the "giddy up" back in that ride
1. Pull the cover off the KIPS armature (little grey thingy above the water pump) and make sure it moves freely by hand - engine NOT running of course
2. Pull the flywheel and check the timing, I can't remember the marks but I;m sure Manny or Rick will.
Start there and we'll see what we can do for you.
mikesmith:
Hi Hawk! There are 3 timing marks, center one is standered setting.Clockwise with the stator advances, counter clockwise retards.Set it on the center mark. You have the stock jetting, does it seem rich? When it signs off whats it do?Blubber,or fall on its face? This may sound basic (youd be amazed how the little things get you)did someone leave a rag in the air box?Start with the simple things and go from there.
Rick:
Swap to a BR8EVX plug as a simple thing first thing out of the gate as well. I am sure we can help dial in the power on your new green ditch digger.
Rick
teamgreen500:
Welcome,
What's the jetting on that thing?
What gas/oil are you running and at what ratio?
Let us know about the timing and any of the other answers.
Good Luck,
Manny
