First Ride
riproost:
Got my my first ride in three years and the '90 K5 did great.
After being parked for a while the bike got a new countershaft(sprocket spun on the old one) and a fresh topend. Also Larry Wiechman did a little magic on my cylinder head w/milling, dome work and a compression release!
We went to Haspin Acres in eastern Indiana. The KX started on the first kick and it was on. The hill infested woods were pretty dry for Haspin's standards which made for good riding. I rode somewhat conserative(but not completely) not being being on the bike in sometime.
I had one easy getoff when a hill had a large treeroot running paralell with the trail and it wanted me to stay to the left and I was committed to the right.
Also while climbing a steep rocky hill-almost like ledges sicking out, I got about half way up and lost momemtum popping over one of the ledges and stalling. It was rider error and I was tired! I was on the steep grade with the one foot drop directly behind me along with the rest of the hill.
Holding my tongue just right and hoping gravity didn't start pulling I folded the kickstart lever out, put the bike in N pushed in the compression release and kicked it. Got the K5 in first right when it started sliding back and worked my way to the top of the hill-still holding my tongue just right!
Athough years ago I probably would not have got myself in that perdicament I would not have tried to start the bike there, I would have have gone back down trying to use energy that I did not have!
That compression release works great and I highly recommend Larry's work! Thanks Larry
Overall it was a great day and the KX did remarkably well with only a brake pedal height adjustment.
Can't wait to go again
Thanks for listening to me rattle on.

RipRoost,
Nice to hear there is another KX5 at Haspin. I agree about "dry for Haspin" standards. Last time I had the K5 out it was sloppy, sloppy. Difficult to do anything with all that wheel spin. Glad to hear your back on the bike after a break. Perhaps we'll run into each other, we tend to ride Haspin a lot since we are only 45 minutes away. Thanks for the pics.
