Front wheel width

I am buying a rim/spoke kit to lace my stock front hub to 17" rim. What is the largest width tire that will fit without any modifications? I would measure but my bike is in boxes.    --1993-- model       

\I know the front forks changed after this not sure if it affects width?

Choices were 2.5" or 3.5" rim.
