ok, now considering bone stock bikes.... where would the KX stand? I would think that for a short distance maybe not a full 1/8th and deffinitely NOT a full 1/4 mile, but for a short distance the KX would be very close to as quick as a supersport bike like an R6 or R1 type bike. I had this argument with a friend of mine and he said there's no way my KX500 was anything close to one of those bikes. Was I wrong by saying I felt it was? I said at least through the first 3 maybe 4 gears I would be close.

You are correct. A stock KX500 will keep quite well with most modern day rice rockets, more so the older ones. The only issue you would run into would be that modern day ricers have quite large first gears (50-80mph) and have no need to shift most of the race.

Hey Guys
I've ridden big sportbikes (over 1000cc, heavily modified sometimes, even had a turbo 1997 GSXR750, made 190 hp at the rear) for over 10 years,
AND THE FIRST TIME I RODE A KX500 I WAS AMAZED AT HOW VIOLENT AND ANGRY THESE BASTARDS ARE!!!
First KX500 I ever rode, I bought. a 1997, fairly ratty (ended up doing a bunch of work to it) but still, i was shocked and amazed!!
As for KX's vs Sportbikes, I actually own both - a 97 KX500 with some mods done (pipe, piston, light porting, jetting, etc) and a 2004 GSXR1000 with some mods done (lots of ignition / fuel mapping on a dyno, PC fuel box, exhaust, magnesium wheels, gearing, etc)
one HUGE difference between these bikes - THE GEARING!!!!!
a lot of the 04, 05+ sportbikes from the japanese (04 R1, 04 ZX-10, 04 CBR1000, 05 GSXR1000, etc) have 100 mph first gears
Yeah, thats right, 100 mph in first gear..... For two reasons - 1. People have a really nasty habit of flipping these bikes over in 1 st gear, and 2. For racing, its occasionally useful to have a first gear that tall (in roadracing, a super slow, "bus stop" corner is 50 mph, min, and of then the slowest corners are 70 +
So that means that in 1st gear, the sportbike will do what the KX will in 5th
The KX first gear, with stock gearing, does what.... 35 mph??
If the KX has 2/3 the power to weight ratio, or even 1/2, but has gearing that is nearly 3 times as deep, well, thats going to make for an impressive launch!!!
Also, the KX doesn't turn many RPMs (revs out at about 8,000, max power about 7,000), vs 12 - 14K redlines for the sportbikes. The KX, being a vicious little two stroke, makes a ton of power low down in the powerband. so not only is the gearing shorter, the KX also gets into its powerband quicker
One of these days i'm going to sit down and do some spreadsheets on these, figure out the power ("tractive force"?) being put to the rear wheel
I have done some rough numbers in my head, and I think that at least up to about 35 mph or so, the KX puts more power to the ground - and i'm talking absolute power, not power to weight
I think a KX can beat a sportbike for a short distance. I dont know about running a full 1/8th mile, a lot of these crotchrockets can run over 110 in the 1/8
But for a full city block? something like that? a guy who can ride on a KX could do pretty well i think
Trust me on something, sportbike guys who don't ride dirtbikes have NO idea of the power of these things. I should know, I had no clue!! :)
