I don't put much trust in what the people at the shows or dealers say. They don't seem to know what is going on from the times I have asked about new products. Whether the reason is keeping it secret so the sales of the old stock does not stop or they truly do not know the result is the same.
I am looking to upgrade my boat electronics and talked to a number of 'reps' that thought I should 'buy now' and nothing else new was going to happen. I called the factory and after pushing a 'tech' person about 'improved products' coming out he said, "Wait until January before you buy".
My 2012 VStrom 1000 was the same way, "Nothing new planned" though I like my '12 better than the new ones anyway.
The tech is for sure there now to bring a 'clean' 2 popper, both street or off road to the market. It is all about whether they think it will sell and be worth the effort. KTM sales kicking their butt's will help them make the decision! Once they take the step their manufacturing costs will be less than the 4 strokes.
I look to snowmobiles and outboards for something to salivate over. Stock 600's that put out 100 HP? Ohhh yeah... Not sure I would do the off road version as I am cutting back on the HiPo stuff I own but it would be tempting. Particularly if it had electric start!

The original rumor came from Dirt Rider magazine. They seemed pretty convinced that it was going to happen. I think you are spot on about reps and dealers. They don't want to give away a secret or hamper existing model sales.

Cernics had a petition at Lorettas I think for a new rm125
McGrath had a kx350 on his Insta gram asking Kawasaki to give us what we want.
My local Ktm dealer can't keep 300s in stock and they are considering beta just so they can get more 300 two strokes.
2 strokes are hot and something has got to give. 10 years of 4 stroke coolaid was too much for me.
I won't buy another new Bike unless it's an easy to ride mx 2 stroke. I don't want to Pay a premium for a ktm, as the goodies don't make me faster.
I've got two 3 year olds to buy bikes for as they get older. No way am I going to buy 4 strokes that I can't even work on. I'll rebuild old bikes if I have to.
