I have owned several CR500's of different years and all of them had a hit for the power band which reminds me of a cr250 but with more torque and not quite as fast of a hit.
I believe that until you ride a good running CR500 and a good running KX500 you simply won't know.

Here is what I can tell you;
I have owned three KX500's. The current one is a 2000 and is all stock. The engine is in excellent condition. The other two were older, the first air cooled, the second was the first year water cooled. I have owned more then 80 motorcycles. This bike is the only one I have been actually scared of. Not saying 'scared me', have had bike's that did that, I mean 'scared of'.  :-o Riding it more is the cure for that.
The pull off the bottom is unreal. 'Think' throttle and the front end is coming up. I can not imagine anything pulling harder other than a pure drag bike. Traction has been the biggest issue with it. CR500's and KX500's are both badass.  :evil:
